texas has just been issued an energy emergency alert level 3. Meaning they will initiate rolling power outages due to the high demand. certain areas will be without traffic lights and other infrastructure

ERCOT has initiated system-wide rotating outages three times in the history of ERCOT (Dec. 22, 1989, April 17, 2006 and Feb. 2, 2011).

This is what it looks like in Austin right now: https://streamable.com/ktj7py The temperature will stay below freezing for days, so the snow and ice will be sticking around for a bit. Very unusual for Texas.

Funny how people supposedly used to winter weather don't seem to understand that snow in near-freezing weather works and melts differently from snow in sub-zero temperatures. It's particularly bad along the cold front when there's very warm humid air behind it. (And yeah, infrastructure. I'm not going anywhere if there's a foot of snow that hasn't been plowed.)

There's a lot of truth here. It wouldn't make sense for southern states to invest heavily in snow removal when it happens so rarely. As for temps, it's odd because a full week of -20F up here in the Midwest doesn't actually yield very much snow (if any at all). So it's less about driving in snowy/icy conditions and more about keeping your vehicle from getting too cold and not starting.

Yeah. No snow in the forecast for Minneapolis until temperatures hit 28. They're probably cold enough there now that snow on the roads doesn't melt and refreeze under tires either.

You protect your home with your fists? Or cower in your closet while calling the cops? For the most part we just like shooting guns. Its an adrenaline high that has the added benefit of being something we can defend ourselves with. Ive probably wasted 1000 rounds of ammo (low ball number) and not a bit of it has been short towards another person.

Its kinda weird. I hear gunshots in a rural area I dont bat a eye cause likely its just some fucker shooting cause he can. In a urban environment thats when it catches my attention.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowmelt_system they are normal in many parts of america that get snow

Texas will be back to normal within one to two weeks, but for the time being it's 13 degrees where I am and the windchill is 5 to 20 degrees below 0. and yes the ground is properly frozen.

Hoarding is dumb but the main part of why so many stores are empty is because the trucks cannot drive food to restock. I don't think most people know how little stock grocery stores have on hand at a given time, in order to minimize waste.

my HEB has been missing numerous shipments over the past few days and that is the main reason we have been empty on some items.

It takes many weeks for the ground to be properly frozen. You southern people just sound so completely out of your element trying to talk about anything winter related.

Like seriously wtf. You're trying to talk to someone who has been through hundreds of winter storms.

No that is crazy dramatic. Southern people freak out over winter. News at 11. There is no debate here.

At least with covid, hoarding kind of made sense, but it was still dumb. People who hoard are getting way more than they need. People are gonna be trying to return stuff in a week.

The amount of ignorance I've heard ITT from southern people about winter weather is insane. Even with all of our infrastructure, it can take many days to clear out a snowstorm. In extreme cases it can take a week or more for snow removal to catch up. Some neighborhoods never get plowed and it's just people continuously driving over the snow that "clears" the road.

You guys don't even understand this. You are complaining about a few days of rough roads and power outages.

This is simple, this is not a time to hoard. Hoarding almost always results in a ton of wasted food. Stop wasting food.

Covid being frightening didn't justify hoarding. How much food was wasted back then?

There just isn't any defense for hoarding at all.
