Sure, it got several ports with added content, but it was always fundamentally the same. Given that it is often regarded as the best jrpg the 16-bit era and was instrumental in shifting RPGs towards non-linear narratives.

I'd like Chrono Cross to get a PC port, so it can be played with HD. That'd be cool.

I guess it's a bit of a licensing nightmare because Square Enix, Nintendo, and Akira Toriyama all have rights to the original product.

Neither did FF6 (not counting the mobile abomination), Super Mario RPG, nor any of the Genesis Phantasy Star games IIRC.

Games are perfect on their own.

There was going to be a fan made 3D remake but Square filed a cease and desist letter and they had to delete the whole thing.

Would it stay a 16 bit 2D game or would it be changed into a 3D game like chrono cross? I mean either would be cool really, a 3D game would be built from the ground up. If its 2D 16 bit well not sure what they would change for a remake. As they already had several ports with new content.

Wait, Nintendo has rights to Chrono Trigger? But it released on the Playstation, at a time where Nintendo and Sony's rivalry was at its most bitter (and when Square themselves turned away from Nintendo).

IIRC the director (?) was vocally upset that the DS port with its lifeless retranslation didn't sell very well, and I think the series was unofficially canned after that point.

I think they remade FF1-3 because it was cheap to update them from 8 bit to 16 bit level graphics. FF4 remake was also probably cheap to make. They could have done CT in the same style as FF4 remake but maybe the original developers didn't really want to do it or if they were going to do it they wanted a big budget and the execs said no.

Well Super Mario RPG is an easy one to figure the "no remaster/remake" because Nintendo and S-E have a very distant relationship these days. Sure S-E will make games, but collabs are like pulling teeth. Cloud in Smash 4 gets two pieces of music, and it's confirmed that for Ultimate that Cloud was the last 3rd party fighter that Nintendo secured to ensure that they could do "Everyone is Here".

Yearly reminder that square enix put a lazy port of Chrono trigger onto DS cartridges and sold over million copies. square enix then came out and said that fans must not want a new Chrono game because it didn't sell well

It was unofficially canned BEFORE then. The only reason why they made the DS port was just because Square shut down that fan-made Chrono Trigger remake, and in response to upset fans, ported CT to DS.

I'm holding out for one in the graphical style of Trials of Mana.

Seeing how we've received remakes for the Mana series, and enhanced ports of the SaGa series it may just be a matter of time.

Even one offs like Live a Live have been announced as coming to current gen platforms soon.

I agree. I just wish they'd fix the timing of the music during the ending cutscene; that hasn't been done correctly since the SNES (though I've only played the PSX and GBA ports otherwise).

FF6 deserves a remake on the scale of FF7.

That was a game clearly limited by the hardware it was designed for. It was basically a 32-bit RPG stuck on a 16-bit system.

It's not that I think final fantasy 6 is inherently better than Chrono Trigger, but the scope of the game's presentation was more grandiose and was held back considerably by the Super Nintendo.

anyone ever check out the fanmade sequel Crimson Echoes? i watched a playthrough of it on youtube once. it was pretty great.

The edited version by the name of Flames of eternity is much better.

It gives the script a much needed editing pass to make it feel like a sequel and better balances the game. Crimson Echoes is incredibly grindy.

They'll need Toriyama onboard before they can remake Chrono Trigger since it has that Dragonball influence.

or the new guy running Dragon Ball Super, I heard his art style has gotten better with the Moro-Arc right now compared to how he kept making skinny characters previously.

Distant? I'd think more strange? SE does release some classic style RPGs on Switch and DS.

I will say 3 SE characters in Smash feels like a miracle though
