In relative terms the mongols were the strongest. They overran most of Asia and smashed up large European and Middle Eastern armies as well.

That's a bit of a western european way of viewing what they did. A portion of their total force swept through everything from Russia all the way to the German and Austrian borders while other grandsons of Ghenghis were conquering the middle east destroying cities like Baghdad that had populations higher than any city in Europe and yet more grandsons of Ghenghis conquered China which had a population far higher than Europe at the time.

But they were really just paper tigers because they just wrecked people east of Germany.

I'm mostly being facetious for the topic, but the citizens of the Eastern Roman Empire considered themselves Roman right up to, and even after, the fall of Constantinople to the Turks.
