They obviously weren't comfortable at the distance between you and them at that speed or they wouldn't have break checked or tried to get you to pass them. You may have felt you were far enough away to handle it, but maybe you were a bit too close for comfort? You don't want to think you were, but chances are you were you just don't have perfect judgement. Learn from this and move on for everyone's sakes. If nothing else it doesn't hurt or slow you down to back off a bit if someone break checks you, so I don't see what the issue is here.

If the person in front can't see your headlights, you're probably too fucking close. Half a car distance is like nothing. You should be like a car and a half or so at 30-40 mph, 3-5 car length on freeways.

Seems the legal metric is based on seconds. You should space yourself to have 2-3 seconds of reaction and 4-5 seconds of reaction for higher speeds.

I was about to point this out myself, wondering why nobody had commented.

You don't know why the vehicle in front has slowed, there could be any number of reasons. They might feel the driving conditions aren't suitable to go at the speed limit, they might have seen some hazard further up, maybe they don't feel comfortable driving at a certain speed on particular roads because they're aware of certain hazards or dodgy segments of the road, they might have hindered visibility (i.e. light glare, windows suddenly starting to steam up, etc).

I had a situation coming down a motorway at night, I noticed flashing lights ahead, so started to slow down. A car coming up behind me (which was driving too fast) nearly rear ended me and had to swirve, putting him head on with the police officers who were attending an accident. While he stopped in time, one of the police officers had to leap away from the cones, he was that close.

I think the problem is that you don't get your own fault. You're complaining about someone applying their brakes because you could hit them, and don't get whats wrong with that.

What if a kid had ran out in front of them (you said, it was a residential area), and they had to do a full emergency stop. At the distance and speeds you were going then you'd most likely have ploughed into the back of them and potentially shunted their car forward.

30mph*5280ft/mi*1mi/3600s => 44 FEET PER SECOND. 1/2, 1, shit 2 car lengths and you're still at risk.

I recall from drivers ed that to be safe you need 1 car length for every 10 mph you're going, but the need increases once you exceed 70 mph.
