I can't believe how bad racism was back then.

Up until the North wiped the shit outta the south in the civil war.

Jim crow was booming in america.

If I was taken back to that time

and to think in texas in the 50s 60s

It still was very strong in the racist south

my grandma told me she saw jim crow signs in the restaurants and that It was true.

This was less than 100 years ago.

i understand there pain it sucks america did this to them.

it's appaling and to think the capitol incident was somehow charged by jim crow supporters

because we did see a conferdate flag in the white house again which stands for jim crow era politcs and support.

read up on it
I dived in a lil and i had to stop.......because it's so bad.

Trump must never be president and latino voters need to stick to the democrats cause it seems like there the last sane party in america.

They did, but the South still ended up getting much of what they wanted in the aftermath.

Hell, land promised to former Black slaves were instead given to former Confederate generals.

This is one of the reasons I dislike it when stories set in the past try to gloss over history for the sake of audience comfort. It's difficult to get people to acknowledge the presence of racism in the present when you try to pretend it didn't exist in the past.

Jim Crow is gone, but the streets are still littered with his feathers.

https://www.wftv.com/news/trending/louisiana-cemetery-apologizes-after-black-deputy-denied-burial/U6CG74K62VCP7LDDLIZYCETY5I/

A cemetery in Louisiana refused to bury the body of a black police officer because of a decades old "whites only" policy from the 1950s. They finally removed that rule in their bylaws after this incident, but the fact that the employee of the cemetery proudly touted that rule as the reason to refuse the body in 2021 is insane.

I found out about this era.

besides the civil rights movement or slavery.

I never knew what jim crow was until I saw a video.

this is not something openly taught

It's a digusting era. which needs to be reveled to all

I didn't understand why but after the capitol incident I looked more into the history of what these trumpers were doing and it's really pathetic the GOP is gonna let TRUMP slide. after inciting a race war.

I grew up in New Hampshire. Only ever really learned about Jim Crow as the name of "a bad thing" between learning more details about the Civil War and more details about the Civil Rights movement.

Depends on the school. I grew up in a private, 100% white Christian school and never knew what Jim Crow was until I moved to a public school where I then learned about the white southern perspective of Jim Crow. It took until literally sophomore year high school, when I moved to the PNW, that I actually got a real understanding of what happened. At least one that wasnt white-washed

It was like that for a large portion of the country, especially as more blacks began migrating from the south to the north during the Great Migration, the north started taking on more Jim Crow-like tactics. A large number of sundown towns like the one in the first couple of episodes of Lovecraft Country were not only in the south, but in the midwest too. There's one in Illinois that my uncle goes out of his way to bypass as he heads back home from Texas to Chicago, it's called Anna, Illinois (really that whole county area). Anna is the town's name but it's most infamously known by its acronym, Ain't No *blanks* Allowed, I'll let y'all fill in the blank.

The thing about Jim Crow is that talking to my parents who lived through it and my grandparents (RIP) who lived through it. Once it was "over" they were just supposed to act like nothing happened and the perpeTRAITORS -some of whom are still alive - walk around as if they did nothing wrong.

It's sad that many people learned about the Tulsa massacre from a TV miniseries. Morgan Freeman can fuck right off. We need Black History Month (even though it is the coldest, shortest month of the year).

They mostly teach a sanitized version in schools. It usually goes Montgomery Bus Boycott, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges and school integration, MLK, I Have A Dream, that's it.

I read about Black Wall St., Red Summer of 1919, George Stinney, Emmitt Till, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, etc on my own time when I was younger, didn't get to actually have a discussion about it until I got to college.

I live in Louisiana. Was gonna make this topic but I'll just piggyback off this:

Its amazing how many white southerners I talk to who defend the confederate flag. They don't fly it but they genuinely believe its a symbol of their "southern culture". Because they know its looked down upon is why they don't actually rep it. The Mississippi state flag had the confederate symbol in it literally up until this past election.

I've had many conversations about the flag with southerners. The conversation always involves some kind of bullshit about how its misinterpreted.
