I don't feel compelled to check the news every hour to see what fresh dumb shit has transpired. It's also reassuring to see that serious action is being taken on covid, both restrictions and vaccine acceleration. Trump pretty much gave up even mentioning covid for the last two months let alone doing anything about it.

Politics being boring is a-ok with me.

Oh yeah, Biden isnt doing anything to get people help financially. Sure, hes changing the picture on the $20 bill, but thats it so far. Hes actually helped people lose jobs when he stopped work on that pipeline.

The entire republican platform is basically "why change anything bad if the solution isn't perfect". Yet when it comes to conservatives wanting to end the forever wars (a good goal!) I never hear them crying about jobs even though the various components of the MIC are collectively a huge employer in the US. So really I'm pretty sure it's just about finding a way to deny climate change, because the evil libs believe in it, without actually denying it.

In other words yes change is costly but it's a worthwhile investment

building pipelines aren't secure jobs. they are temporary. not really the optimal thing to focus on if you're a 'we need more jobs' kind of person

Why doesn't the government offer additional educational financial assistance to fossil fuel workers so they can shift to clean energy professions? Do they have a program like that?

Is never a valid reason why something should continue. The XL pipeline was terrible in its inception. It hasnt created anywhere near the number of jobs promised, and has caused significant ecological damage already. So fuck off with that.
While I believe we need to focus on creating clean energy (if such a thing can be accomplished) all shutting down a pipeline will do is force the shipment of said oil (because we're still gonna use oil) by rail and diesel, both of which cause more pollution than a pipeline. Closing the pipeline also has the potential of makingthe US less energy independent. People will still use oil and thus line the pockets of Saudi princes to get it.
GrabASnickers posted...
The entire republican platform is basically "why change anything bad if the solution isn't perfect".
I don't see how closing the pipeline is a solution at all. It won't decrease demand for oil and doesn't create a clean alternative energy. It makes the US rely on other more polluting means to ship oil and other nations to produce. Not a solution.

My main point here is that, yeah, we're going to lose jobs in the fossil fuel industry, and that's something we're going to have to face if we ever want to get off of them. It wasn't a commentary on the efficacy of shutting down the pipeline. There are some things I think are dumb about it but that's because of the constant push pull of competing interests putting this in a state of flux. But I will say that putting in new permanent infrastructure in the first place isn't a good sign of a legitimate commitment to clean energy, so it's good to see someone put their foot down in it even if it's inevitably going to be reversed again.

Jobs get lost. I don't see people who used to manufacture typewriters throwing a fit. Shit gets phased out. It's unfortunate if it was your livelihood but that's no excuse to cling to an archaic or harmful system.

And yeah I think the government should probably make an effort to help people displaced by federal policy changes find new work or at least pay for them to take courses on how to work in the new way.

But honestly the writing has been on the wall for fossil fuels for literally fifty years. Republicans love to tell people their misfortune is their own fault. In the case of people who have careers in fossil fuel industry affiliated positions, yeah, actually, you should have seen this coming.

Republicans have been telling people that climate change isn't real that whole time. A lot of people who pursued energy jobs, even with climate change well in the public consciousness, probably bought into the denialism and now they're ingrained with the idea that it's some liberal lie. Strange how when climate change initiative kills their jobs, they're still mad at the libs even though it was the conservatives lying to them the whole time.

They're a long-term infrastructure improvement that enables jobs and the economy. And even temporary jobs are a big fucking deal when the economy is tanked, because temporary work can help jumpstart an economy. Of course, we have a president who doesn't give a shit about business or the economy.

the pipeline has already spilled over 380,000 gallons of oil in north dakota. it has destroyed an extremely large portion of their land.
