Im usually veeeeery weary of those Animal Crossing/Minecraft type games where its just This is it, this is the game, you gather shit, you build shit and it just goes on forever.

Is the gameplay engaging and fulfilling with a point and purpose or is it just mindless busy work?

If you don't like those gathering games then I can promise you that you'll hate Ark even if you play in an offline modified server where you have infinite carry capacity and 100 x harvest rates.

The point of the game is to gather decent weapons,gear and tames to take down the bosses on the map. The original map along with the DLC maps tell a story among its explorer notes you find. There's 4 free maps as well

It's very much a "spend a lot of time gathering shit to build a house" type of game. Its main gimmick is taming dinosaurs but that's a pretty boring mechanic too - you have to get a lot of barbiturate berries and knock the dinosaur out then just feed it berries to keep it out until it becomes tame.

Really wouldn't recommend it even if you are a fan of the genre tbh

you aren't trying to escape though, you're trying to survive. And any answer I give would require explaining all the lore books of all the maps plus the dlc map stories.

mindless busy work. once you stop all your progression will be undone with time unless you play local SP which just feels soulless and boring.

Each story map has a final boss that gets you the ending when you beat it. PvE consists of gathering materials, building a base, taming dinos, maintaining base and dinos, and finally breeding an army to take on bosses. The game does NOT feel polished. Feels janky as hell and is plagued with bugs that when fixed cause worse bugs, an endless cycle.

PvP consists of logging into a map, trying to survive other players, successful and want to log off for the day? All that progress is undone when you log off as your stuff is still on the map (including your body) and you'll wake up to a dead character and razed base.

I love PvE and have over 2k hours in it but I really couldn't recommend this game to anyone in the state it has always been in. With your comments on engaging/fulfilling gameplay I don't think you'd like it. None of the attacks have weight and hit registration is really janky. The game is like crack for me, awful shit but can't stop. Having at least one friend to play with makes the game much more enjoyable, but I wouldn't bother solo.

games like this and Conan Exiles bore me. I'm not a minecraft fan either. I prefer Animal Crossing because you don't have to manually build a house or something. I'm not very good at it so I tend to just not do it. Hell, when I play Sims, I never build, I just take one of the houses already made.

I've gotten into a grind of playing Rust on a primarily PVE server, with PVP zones, and plug-ins out the ass
