He said that when he was a young man, he did backbreaking hard work in the construction industry, and through investing, he bought a 4 bedroom house in the suburbs.

I don't really care about owning a home at all... In fact I just want my shelter to be functional and the cost to be low.

Sounds like your granddad is out of touch.

Edit: But I guess I want some normalcy and that involves Being horny for trolls?

While he's obviously not 100% correct, if you add up all the modern luxuries that grandpa never had it does start to add up. Cable tv, internet, and a smartphone with a data contract alone is probably $200 or more per month out of everybody's pocket that Grandpa didn't have to worry about. I imagine people are hiring contractors as well at a much higher rate for things like home and auto repairs and people are probably not mending their own clothes when they get holes.

Yes, inflation and wages play a factor, as does the fact that the cheaper suburban homes are obviously much further from city centers now than they were 80 years ago due to population growth, but there is something to be said for the fact that older generations made due with much less then most people do now which does play a factor into why they were able to afford more property. I see a lot of people saying that they should be able to buy a home as easily as somebody from the '40s, but nobody ever says that they're willing to live like people from the '40s in order to have that extra income available.

I dont understand why boomers dont get that minimum wage has been the same while cost of living and housing has gone up tremendously.

this includes inflation. Also getting a good job way over minimum requires a college degree which also costs a shit ton more money than the past. Trade school is an option but good luck to your health in your later years

Most of these boomers didn't have the luxury of living at home until they're 30 like millennials. Maybe get a job or two and save up for a down payment instead of smoking weed and playing videos and complaining about how easy boomers had it.

Boomers could buy a house right out of high school without a college education working a 40 hour a week factory job. Their wives didn't even need to work.

They are so grossly out of touch with reality.

He's right.

Part of the problem seems to be they feel like they should be able to live where they want to, instead of where they can afford to.

There is nothing wrong with living in Midwestern states.

I suspect that a lot of the people who talk about only wanting to live in big cities, because smaller cities, suburbs, and towns are too boring are a lot like people who spend thousands of dollars on cutting edge PC hardware just to play Minecraft. They're going to want to live in LA because it's trendy, but they'll probably just spend most of their time on the internet at home anyway.

There's a lot of generalizing here.

The fact is, millennials have higher student debt (boomers told us we needed to go to college), housing costs are higher, and available houses are older meaning that there's likely going to be some work needed on them.

There's a lot of generalizing every time people complain that boomers had it easy. A whole lot goes unspoken when people say that somebody with a high school degree could get a job and have a wife a bunch of kids and a house and live comfortably.

And saying that student debt is higher, which is absolutely true, still doesn't address the points that people have brought up about where people are choosing to live and what luxuries they're choosing to have. nor does it address the fact that the country has a shortage of skilled blue collar and trade workers and that people would be perfectly able to make $60,000 as an electrician and live comfortably in the midwest if they didn't spend their formative years making fun of the Midwest and looking down on blue collar workers. those options still exist, even to the people with student debt, but I have to imagine that pride plays a large part in not admitting to it.

I'd like to see this data about people snubbing the midwest or comparable areas because it still appears to be a generalization.

That said, big cities are often where the jobs are for specialized degrees that again, boomers said we needed.

And for the record I actually live in the midwest and bought my first home last year.

And you do? How many houses have had major, dealbreaker issues you didn't see for yourself before hiring the home inspector? Rental application fees are the real scam. People will charge $25 for you to apply for a room/apartment, keep the money, and keep charging people without ever renting it out.
