She's got no redeeming qualities at all. She's annoyingly hypocritical, and not in a funny way. Probably one of the worst written female characters on television, in my opinion. Fry should've stayed with Amy.

What about her is awesome? I really don't get it. She's portrayed as a complete asshole with mannish features.

You. You're coming off as someone who thinks women characters need to be eye candy. She also mostly plays the straight (wo)man, which is made to support and set up the more comedic and stupid characters. She's not suppose to be the funniest character.

Her beliefs and intelligence change very frequently for the sake of plot convenience. That happens across the board, but most frequently with her.

I guess we could also say she's a properly written hypocrite, but she's got very few redeeming qualities or funny moments compared to the rest of the cast.

But is she the funniest character? Cause I consciously avoided implying she wasn't funny at all >_>. I'm just saying you have characters that are there for the sole purpose of being funny and you have characters like Leela who will lean out of that to give context or forward the story. Then Fry or Bender responds with the comedy and her straight man reaction adds to their comedic response.

That's primarily why I get so frustrated with some female leads in shows. Sometimes you just KNOW they were written by a man by the way they act.

TBH I feel like Leela is one of the better written female characters in a comedy.

She had a good balance of femininity vs masculinity, to the point it made her feel like a regular person. She's not always right, she's not always a prude. But at the same time, she's also not portrayed as stupid or nasty. Sometimes she's funny, but she also has plenty of heart.

In a show goes with over-the-top gimmick characters, I think they did a good job of making her feel like a female everyman. She's really relatable.

I dunno. I find her character necessary and well used. I personally prefer female characters in Loren Bouchard shows tho. Home Movies/Bob's Burgers. The characters in those shows kind of strip away gender norms and the characters all seem like they're made from the same starting blank slate. It feels closer to real life. I could see that as being a negative to others tho.

Home Movies and Bob's Burgers are a good example of good female writing.

Also, why does Leela say "Hiyah!" after every single punch or kick? I feel like I'm missing some sort of joke there.

You mean, the guy she has to work with that won't stop trying to get with her no matter how many times she says no? It works out in the end, but can you imagine how much more annoying that makes coming into work? If you're nicer to guys like that, they just cling more and see it as an opening to keep trying. Women have to ve mean to those guys so they get the hint.

That's fair. He's just so sweet to her and she never seems to tell him no in a nice way unless it's a romantic episode where both of them end up without dates or something.

I personally thought she was rather well written given that Matt Groening's team weren't exactly used to telling a big story with continuity. Also, while she was humorous, I got the feeling she was more of a straight man character anyway...even if the situation was absolutely silly.

I will admit she has some of the weakest episodes though with exception to the ones dealing with Fry's love or her parents (among the strongest, especially when she finally meets her parents), but we all know it is because these plots were written in advance and the core of the show.

she is a straight man in a show where the rest of the cast is almost perpetually almost getting everyone killed, and also generally the most capable out of all of them at doing her job. it kind of makes sense for her to be grumpy all the time

and the lines about being "mannish" are just a joke about her being well built from doing martial arts and stuff

Regardless of if she was or not,in the context of the show she comes off desirable. Always on dates and has 2 guys who can't be persuaded away from her. I guess you got people like Sal dissing her, but I think the joke there is a highly undesirable man feeling like he's too good for everyone.

I guess it just depends where you're from and what you've been exposed to, when it comes to what you find triggering in media.

If you aren't used to seeing the strong female type, then characters like that might throw you a loop. If you aren't used to the more traditional role that dominates religious/rural areas, then that might upset you seeing it prevelant in media

Isn't the joke with Leela is that she'd be the hero in a typical sci-fi adventure show (even has a mysterious past where she believes she is the last of her species) but is instead stuck working for a weird delivery company with a bunch of weirdos who are mostly incompetent?

Zapp also ties into that pretty heavily.
