I don't even play sports or know the rules for most (even football) but I know a stupid sport when I see it. The snitch concept is dumb. Basically that's the only thing that matters and the game revolves around the seeker. Snitch=win. And if your team is so far behind that you'd lose if you catch the snitch...why the hell would you catch? Wait and hope your team catches up.

And don't get me started on IRL quidditch...it's a pathetic joke.

the only point is to let harry potter be the hero and it serves that purpose in the narrative so it's fine

I used to teach at an English camp for elementary aged korean kids. I made a 6 week Harry Potter camp. For one of the classes we played a version of Quidditch that I modified for young kids in a small space. It was hilarious and they loved it Lol.

But they were totally wiped by the end of the game. It was super physically demanding.

So the reason you would catch the snitch to end the game even if you're behind is because during a "season" your cumulative points are what are used to determine the overall winner. So if you're having a bad game you'd want to catch the snitch to shut it down even if it means you'll lose that specific game.

The snitch only gives you 150 points iirc so its not always a win.

You need to dunk on the other team 16 times to beat it, though. Such a discrepancy would indicate one of the teams shouldn't even be there,

And why do the house teams practice so much, yet they only play 3 games per school year? At least do a double round robin.

Honestly it's hard to tell without seeing more of the business side of things. How much does a good seekers contract go for? Are there salary caps? A quidditch draft? Maybe it all works out because of those kind of factors

I like that JK seems to have written that match and designed the character of Viktor Krum solely to address the issues people had with her made-up sport and are addressing in this topic.

Where was this addressed? It's kind of implied in the inter-house matches in Hogwarts, sure, but I don't recall any mention that this extends to professional leagues. Is it in one of the myriad of supplementary books?

And in any case, that explanation goes dead in a knockout tournament format, which is quite clearly what the Quidditch World Cup is using to even have a 'Final' match.

I think you meant to quote the sentence I wrote above that one, not this one.

In any case, I daresay there's one, there's tons of books. No, I haven't read it, and I'd presume at least two-thirds of Harry Potter readers didn't, either.

IIRC, she created it after having an argument with her ex-boyfriend. It was specifically designed to infuriate men who were fans of sports.

In Quidditch Through the Ages, there's mention of a match that lasted six months until both teams gave up in disgust. Locals say the Snitch is still there, flying around.

something like that was mentioned, yeah. Schools nerf the fuck out of all the balls. The professional grade ones are ludicrous, apparently.

but the majority of Harry Potter reads like she made it up on the spot (and she probably did), so any attempt to make sense of anything is basically just post-hoc patchwork.

Come to think of it, that means that matchups with lousy Seekers on both teams would be a boon to both teams if leagues truly run on cumulative points to determine the final winner instead of win-loss record.

Have the Chasers on each team run up the score while the two incompetents do their own thing and search around blindly. A couple weeks later, when one of them finally finds the Snitch after the darn thing flies into his open mouth by accident(like Harry's second match!), both teams leave happy with a million points each and sitting on the top two spots of the scorecard. Who cares who won, honestly?

Its possible that the Snitch becomes easier and easier to find(for the school games) so it doesn't last forever. This is probably why games last a few hours in the school, otherwise how else can you explain they ever catch that damn little thing?
