I prefer...

as you know, self checkout is the wave of the future...even walmart has more self checkout slots than actual cashiers now which means automation is inching closer and closer to reality.

But which do you prefer if you could choose? old people no doubt will choose cashier cause it's harder for them to check everything out...or they like to chit chat with the person...

Millennials and younger people however prefer self checkout cause it's more convenient although it's also easier to STEAL too which not every store is on board with just yet..

But which do you prefer?

Typically depends on how many things I'm buying. If it's only a few, then self checkout. Otherwise cashier.

Cashier, but not because I'm lazy. I did use a self-scan line over the weekend at Lowe's because I literally only had one item, but checking out any more than 1 or 2 items becomes a massive exercise in frustration and these days the only place I'm shopping is at the grocery store. After you scan, the weight sensors expect to behave on their terms, and lock you out from proceeding otherwise, so then have to appeal to the attendant anyway. The cashiers can execute this process much more seamlessly, and without having to scan 20 cans of cat food at a rate of 2 per minute. Repeat for the other dozen items you've got, and all the juggling of the plastic bags across the sensors that you have to play a shell game with, and I honestly don't understand why anyone thinks this is a good idea for all but the most sparse of purchases. Yet my local supermarket decided to axe half of the checkout lines and replace them with extra self-checkout lines. Now there's only two cashiers at any time, which just feels like the stores trying to perform a self-fulfilling prophecy of getting people to say "well, it'll be faster in the self-checkout if I have under X items," where X is a gradually increasing number each year.

Self-checkout is an excuse for major corporations to not hire workers and to understaff

always use a cashier imo

Cashier because you haven't seen prices reduced while these stores cut labor costs.

One of my first jobs was working produce in kroger, and it was right before the self scanning started popping up. Kroger had everyone trained as a cashier and had a computer system in place that would look at the line times and would pull people from sections to work cashier if it was busy. It was the most backwards system ever. There were multiple times I would be the only person working produce and I would get called to be the cashier.

All to save on the labor cost of at or around minimum wage employees

Self scanning was inevitable and sucks.

Ps it was one of the busiest krogers in the country and produce alone would do 100k+ a day

self-scan if it's available, but I'm not devastated if it isn't

This one store I went to had an amazing self register though. Just shove your basket/items in the cabinet and shut the door. Everything rings up instantly. Craziest thing I ever saw

i prefer cashier if i'm doing anything other than buying a handful of items at full price

if i'm leveraging a discount, using a coupon, are uncertain about any prices, are buying anything that might require i.d., or need a special bag to pack anything, a knowledgeable human helping is so much better.

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

In non-pandemic times a cashier

(Especially because if I bring my own bag to self checkout it will set off the weight sensor and require an employee to override the system 75% of the time anyway)

Depends on the self check. Like Walmart has 2 different kinds, one that's like you see most places with minimal room to maneuver and another one that looks like a normal register with a belt. I much prefer the long one with a belt cause I can blitz through a whole cart of groceries in just a couple minutes. Yay working retail for most of my life.

Self-checkout if I've got like 10 items or less. It should be the fast lane. People who take a cart full of groceries through self-checkout are the worst.

If the self-checkout area had more space to work with, it would always be self.
