Im sick of the BS ass weight errors. Unexpected item found my ass. Develop a self checkout that works before you ask people to use them.
amazons doing the right thing with their new Amazon stores basically being giant walk-in vending machines.

I've been using self checkout for as long as stores had them and never had a weight issue or any malfunction for that matter.

I use both depending on how much groceries I buy. I like just running in out and using self-checkout, when only purchasing a few items. I like the cashier to bag my groceries if I'm buying a large amount because I am lazy.

I would use the regular lines if they were shorter than the self-checkout lines

But this never happens.

I generally prefer to use the self checkout, but if I've got a lot of stuff, or a lot of groceries that need number codes entered rather than just being able to scan them, I'll go to a cashier.

I only use self checkout when I'm buying like detergent and toothpaste. Anything more than that and especially if produce is involved and I go through the cashier

Anyone who uses self-checkouts is essentially providing these companies with free labour. If you don't have an issue with that, good for you. I do. Walmart is not my friend, I'm not running a register for them for free.

As someone who has worked retail for nearly 10 years, finally quitting this year, your judgement is very flawed. Those positions were never there to begin with. If you want to blame anyone for the self checkouts being a thing, blame cashiers who decide to call in sick to work even when they aren't sick. Self checkouts were put in place to replace those idiots who don't show up for work.

And you don't lose positions, you actually gain multiple positions are people have to watch over the self registers. So while you lose 4-6 regular cash registers, of which only 2 people will show up for work, you gain 2-3 people watching over those self registers, 2-3 times a day.

It also helps to alleviate stress on lineups during later hours when cashiers are getting ready to go home. At my old work, where we didn't have self registers, we had to serve everyone in the store before we could leave. That means we might be working up to 1/2 hour past our shift end before we get to go home. Having self registers there, means the cashiers get to go home closer to their end of shift.

For fuck's sake it's absolutely nothing like that dumb analogy.

I go to a restaurant to have someone make me food that I generally wouldn't make myself at home.

I go to a store to purchase things.

The closest you can get with that analogy is if restaurants made you pay with a self checkout after you're done instead of having a server bring a pinpad to your table. Which I really wouldn't care about either.

I like my bagging

Same. They banned plastic bags where I live and the grocery store doesn't always have paper bags with handles. I walk there and back so I refuse to use handleless bags, so I just bring my own. A cashier would just start bagging shit in handleless ones and I would have to take everything out and rebag it all anyway so I might as well do it myself.

D. It totally depends on the store and the quality of their self check-outs. It seems most large companies have good ones, but there's a few local chain stores here that have TERRIBLE self check-outs. I absolutely will not use those.

Count yourself blessed

I'll swipe 4 lbs of chicken, dump 4 lbs of chicken into a bag, and then the machine beeps and says "please add 4 lbs onto my scale" and then it's locked up until the one attendant in charge of all the stations is free to swipe their card and override. It's a crap shoot on whether or not my time is actually saved.

Again... read my previous message. Those people are the same people that actively call in to work sick. We would have 16 people scheduled for work, only 6 would show up.

Then hire 10 good workers who will show up. Don't replace all 16 with self service and make the customer do the work. Next they'll want us to stack the shelves.

they do, and those people choose to not show up, because people under the age of 23 imo are immature and don't know the meaning of actually working. They would rather hang out with their friends or skip work than earn money. Not all of them, there are a handful of good people, but when 1 bud falls off the tree, others follow because they don't want to do extra work.
