Funny enough, we've almost never used the same boards.

I was trying to find a guide to get the best ending for Winback Covert Operations a couple of years after I had first played it. Somehow it led me here, and I voted on the Poll of the Day, then went to the PotD board for years lol

I was young and somehow managed to get the stupid/bad ending for Winback, it actually didn't require a guide at all IIRC LOL

i can't remember the first guide i ever used, but i remember thinking back when mario 64 was new that nobody would bother with the strategy guide because of this site. and i was hanging around internet forums and video game forums specifically as early as 1997.

coming to the social half of the site -- the gamefaqs irc chat is what caught my interest and was what made me make an account. i hung out in #finalfantasy a lot. i liked the trivia. i liked #squaresoft and #trivia too.

i remember the gta3 board myself -- i remember the guy who flew the dodo in a loop for like ten billion hours. i remember people trying to find the maibatsu monstrosity. i remember people wondering where darkel was. i remember when we first figured out how to get to blue hell.

i guess 'raa mule' came from there, too. i was told that, though; i couldn't place it myself, but i mentioned it on here and someone else connected the dots.

i also spent a lot of time on the perfect dark board and i remember the day they discovered the trick where you fall off the side of the building in the first mission to beat it in like 6 seconds. i remember greystar.

From what I remember, I was looking for a guide for Rayman 2 for PC, I don't know if this came up as a link from GameWinners or not, but I found what I needed here. I had no idea what "message boards" were at the time and thought that they were the term for the dialogs that appear in games and that people had transcribed all of them in case you wanted to go through and read all of them for a particular game, which I had no interest in, so I never bothered to click on the "message boards" for the various games. Eventually I clicked on one out of curiosity and discovered that that was in fact not what message boards were at all, and subsequently made an account.

Pretty sure it was FF7 or FF8.

Used to love the Paranormal/Conspiracy board and CE back in the day.
Then found out about LL in 2004 and jumped ship to there and then came back here a few years ago.

Oh I remember being a dumb middle schooler and seeing some guide for PSO and I saw all the aliases on there and I was like "I wanna be cool like that" so I emailed the author of the guide and offered to help figure out the HP of each enemy in the game (... using the really smart method of just calculating the damage dealt against enemies repeatedly, seems like a guaranteed way to determine that LMAO). Guy never responded to me.

I use to think I was a huge nerd until I came GameFAQs.

I use to think I was a huge nerd until I met the Internet and specifically GameFAQs. I then discovered I'm a normal nerd when compared to extreme nerds. I mean, I love anime, love video games, love nerdy shit like Star Wars and so on so yes I am a nerd and I embrace it.

I first came to GameFAQs because I wanted to interact with people who likes jRPGs like I do. My friends were more into Street Fighter 2, Sports games and action games so they thought my games that heavily focused on inventory and counting numbers in form of power and stats were weird, and I can't blame them. Anyway, coming here and to other online communities has shown me just how extreme nerds can be.

Elitism: I came here to the boards to discuss how great a game like Chrono Trigger is, the plot, graphics for its time, maybe some secret items I never knew about. Sadly, these positive discussion barely happened. People were mostly petty and spiteful as fuck for whatever reason. If someone had to help you out with the game whether it is plot related or some special item, then you'd already be looked down upon at as a loser if you already didn't know everything about the game. I never thought that acting superior to others online was such as huge online nerd trait. It's like common courtesy doesn't exist here.

Grammar, spelling and so much more: I grew up with people who used slangs and tons of informal English words. Unsure of the real reasons but nerds online would throw the biggest fit over the wrong usage and spelling of words. People acted like it's life and death to get everything 100% accurate with grammar and spelling which was extremely confusing for me because you'd think that a video game websight would one of the most chillaxed place on the Internet to post casual informal words. And it doesn't end there. I've always posted the story about this incident a long time ago where I was berated for using acronyms or shorten words instead of the full words. I guess "acting" like you're an English professional was just another way to acting like you were superior to others.

Analytical to the beyond/Contrarian: As a nerd myself, I never imagined I would ever be super analytical on trivial things(or anything really). To me, sometimes if shit don't make sense then oh well, life goes on. Or even if it did make sense, then why would I try my dearest to find holes for the sake of it? I have a strong feeling nerds do this NOT because they want to try and understand things better but because they desperately want to find something contradicting in everything. Does arguing trivial semantics give life or something? Again, it's another way for nerds to feel superior.

I NEED PROOF!: Why do nerds so eagerly need source material for everything? Personally for me, if I was to make a claim it's probably from a baseless generalization that may or may not be an over exaggeration that is influenced by the current mood or emotion I'm in. In other words, I'm completely fine with you disagreeing with me or think I'm making shit up. People care too much about what baseless shit other people say. Whatever the case, this type of situation are NEVER done in good faith. Even if someone provided you with source there's still a great chance they you will still disagree or shutdown the credibility of that source. I've come to realize proof and source isn't evidence to back up your claim with nerds, but an act of hostility.

Ackchyually, technically you're wrong: I will never understand the habitual need of having to technically correct someone especially for trivial things that are not your business. I think the worst part is that nerds do this NOT because they genuinely want to inform/educate you but, again, it's a way of acting superior. Is there a nerd social score for this or something?

Lost to vagueness: I think this trait is literally dangerous. The trait of literally understanding and taking everything at face value. For as smart as nerds are, they do not understand hyperbole and exaggeration. They do not understand implications or inferences. If you are being vague just a little bit then it will confuse the shit out of them. You will have to paint a very detail picture that meets their high standard for them to completely understand you. Maybe this is an act of superiority or maybe it could be something else. Again, I think this trait is very dangerous.

I'm sure there's more and I'll eventually add them to this list of extreme nerd traits. As a huge nerd myself, I am VERY happy and lucky to say that I have none of these traits and if I did ever display any of them I would do whatever I can to curve it. If you do have these traits then I encourage you reflect and do some soul searching unless of course you enjoy having these traits. Don't let this hit too close to home.

Came around in mid 1998 when I first started fooling around with this Internet nonsense.

GameFAQs was probably the 3rd site I visited.

The others were Odyssey of Hyrule and Zelda Power.

Another was Final Fantasy Shrine or RPG Shrine.

Relatable. I grew up around big toughies, so I was the odd one out for not being into starting shit and making life all about fucking as many chicks as possible. I was never insecure about it, but going online definitely made me realize I was on the opposite side of the spectrum in other groups. Which gave me a comfortable spot because I got to play both roles.

I think it was when I was playing Megaman Battle Network 3 on GBA not long after it came out. I had several friends that played it and my friend destroyed me with a Program Advance called Master Style. It did 900 damage, looked cool as fuck and I wondered how he got it. He told me I need the Numberman codes for it. I couldnt find them all in game. I searched the internet and here I am.

I think one of the codes on Gamefaqs is a duplicate code as well
