It's really for ease of discussing the game on different consoles (ffB would be kinda hard for a PS4 player), and although I disagree that they've become too complicated (things like "xx" for cancel, numbers for buttons or other weird notations aren't really new at all), I can definitely get how newer players could be put off by them.

Tekken is about the only FG I play at a high level, if you'd like any help with the terminology or anything else don't be shy about asking, I love Tekken discussion.

Fighting games that old with that many seasons under it's belt are going to trend towards being more technical as the only remaining players are veterans.

Games like Granblue fantasy are much more novice friendly.

It's also another great example of a game where newer characters are far more technical than launch characters, and the mechanics themselves have been made more complex in the most recent season with the addition of assist select.

I just miss the days of mindless button mashing Marvel vs Capcom games with friends, and with random people at the bowling alley, with smell of pizza, and fries in the air.

If you think real-time fighters are complex then check out turn-based fighters like Toribash.

It's a shame there's no damn tournaments. I was pretty excited to see how this would effect tournament play but... nope.

Outside of Arc System Works patching in rollback the way they did with accent core +r, you're not likely to see another big tournament until everyone is vaccinated.

Tekken is absurdly stupid with how much shit top players have to know

Like for how little money they make it's not worth the effort

It's a game, not a career. Some people find the complexity fun.

Things such as 1-2 frame links windows during moves are just beyond stupid. Theres no good reason for them at all outside of all but the most highest lv techniques or combos. Not a character's BrB.

Seriously, all weeks or months players waste in training mode trying to connect two meesily moves could actually be spent learning game mechanics, other characters, combos, mix ups, and just playing the game and having fun.

You don't, haha...

I usually have the best luck hitting electrics with f,d+2,df instead of a SRK motion though, I'd give that a shot.

Tbh that's usually what they do, I can't think of a single game or character that NEEDS 1FLs to compete, although they do help. No even semi-skilled player is neglecting other aspects just to practice links for any serious amount of time.

Soul Calibur VI was the first traditional fighter I had played since, uh, probably Soul Calibur 2. And damn, it took me a long time to figure out wtf I was doing, even with all the tutorials.

Consider Granblue fantasy if you're looking for a fighter that's a little more newbie friendly. If you're willing to get something slightly older, persona 4 arena is also a good choice.

Guilty Gear strive is also trying to position itself as being an entry into the franchise if you're willing to wait a little bit.

It might seem daunting looking at a game like Tekken, but Tekken has never attempted to be friendly towards newcomers. We are basically in a fighting game Renaissance right now with so many titles being put out by major and minor players, so there's no reason to feel intimidated. There's almost certainly a fighting game out there for you.

Nah. SF4 / 5 have literally all the same shit SSF2 does plus a bunch of extra subsystems & cancels.

That doesn't mean the old stuff is bad, but they're definitely not more simple.

In some ways they are. Tekken 7 has a "move button" that lets newer players do 1 of 4 moves with L2 + button. DBFZ (and a bunch of newer games) has autocombos. UMVC3 had a comeback mechanics in X-factor. The frame buffer in modern fighters compared to older ones is massive. Expansive tutorial and combo modes are prevalent in pretty much every fighter not named Tekken.

Mortal Kombat still seems like the fighter for casuals. I actually win most of my fights online on that.

In Dragon Ball Fighterz the average player whoops me so bad online its kind of embarrassing.

And dang, I'm so used to fast anime fighters, to hear 14 frame moves being used to punish is so unusual lol

I'm glad I got into it when I was younger. The genre's pretty impenetrable, outside a few newer titles and Soul Calibur, and there's no way I'd set aside time to learn from scratch nowadays.

That being said, SFV is extremely newbie friendly, and it's probably the best time to learn. I got my start on fucking HD Remix, a game that was almost entirely veterans from the get go. It took me over a month to win my first match. The only way I managed that level of dedication was because I needed distraction from a breakup. If not for that, I would never have learned fighting games.

I spent a good month with Soul Calibur IV this summer and really liked it. Hadn't played a fighting game seriously since Tatsunoku vs Capcom. Then I went out and bought basically every PS3/360 era fighting game there is, but I haven't dove into any of them yet.
