Everyones reality is different. Two people can experience the exact same thing and come away with complete opposite takes. So in a sense, reality is what you make of it. You are actually in control and understanding and utilizing that can be rather powerful.

Reality is objective, the perception of that reality is what's subjective. Whether or not you perceive a wall as being there, you're not going to be able to walk through it. Beyond that, there are a lot of possible facets to the question. For something like vision and hearing, that's clearly tied to biological functions. For interpretation of events (and even an arrangement of events), that tends to be absurdly open-ended. There's no unbiased way to report history, because so much of it is subjective ranging from what people choose to focus on (and what gets omitted) to how the events are framed, etc.

I've already tried. He's not interested in actual philosophical dialogue. He's more interested in putting himself on a pedestal and petting his ego than actually pursuing any sort of attempt at enlightenment. I think he genuinely believes most of the shit he says.

I don't know what this means. I think Zeus already nailed it when he said that reality is objective, but our perception of it is subjective. Truth, by definition, is demonstrable. If it's not demonstrable then maybe don't call it "truth".

I smoke a lot of weed too, and I don't think that's inherently the problem. Plenty of intelligent people smoke lots of weed. The problem more lies in that he doesn't think critically about what amounts to "stoner thoughts" and just accepts those thoughts as genuine insight.

A tree does not think, yet it clearly does exist. The enemy creatures in our video games think via AI, but clearly do not exist. Therefor thought is not a determining factor for existence. If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Of course it does; sound is more than the brain's interpretation of atmospheric vibrations, and to believe that existence is reliant upon human observation is an argument of unequaled shallowness and the ultimate vanity.
