In essence, Republicans have always been for big business and still are. It's just that in the post Civil War era, when new states were being adopted into the Union in the west, having a government that operated big helped that big business. Democrats wanted little government interference. Once all those states were settled and business was properly booming, Republicans were like "good now back off" to government and became the party of small government.
