18 y/o College Student, Skylar Mack from Georgia and her bf, 24 y/o Vanjae Ramgeet are sentenced to 4 MONTHS in PRISON in the Cayman Islands after they violated the strict COVID-19 rules following a recent ruling that will be appealed!!

She has since been in prison on Tuesday when the ruling was announced after they both plead guilty as her lawyer, Jonathan Hughes argued for a less severe sentence

He said "They're 2 young people who have never been in trouble before. This is the first time they've had interaction with police, the courts, prison"

Mack is a PRE-MED student at Mercer University and arrived there on November 27 and was supposed to undergo a 2 week quarantined as mandated by the government which electronically tracks anyone who arrives to the British Carribean territory. But she broke quarantine right away on Nov 29 when her bf picked her up to attend a water sports event

After their arrest, a judge ruled for them to provide 40 hours of community service and 4400 fine. Ramgeet was ordered a 2 month curfew at 7pm but the prosecution said this punishment was too lenient and wouldn't deter others so a higher court ruled in favour of a more harsher punishment to be done immediately

Judge Roger Chapple said both violated safety measures of selfishness and arrogance and Mack spent 7 hours in public without a mask or social distancing

The sentence is the first of its kind as her family are now worried for her in prison in a foreign country on her own and while it's something she brought on herself, it's very distressing

It's unclear how she met Ramgeet as he is a competitive jet skier like her father

Her grandmother, Jeanne Mack has reached out to President Trump to get them to RELEASE her as a staff says the WH is looking into it

Jeanne says she was on the phone with her and said "The minute she starts talking, she starts crying, she's afraid once she makes it back in the states, everyone will hate her".

She said Mack wanted to be a DOCTOR since 10 when asked for a suture kit as a present

They are the first couple to be sentenced under an amended law targeting COVID-19 violators as a canadian couple were fined 1200 each under the previous law

The Cayman Islands has only 62,000 people with more than 300 cases and 2 deaths and want to keep it that way

Don't like it, don't go. Nothing pisses people off around the world more than "Americans think their laws protect them in our country" when it really doesn't work like that.

It's pretty amazing when people travel to other countries and break the law.

No accountability whatsoever, as expected.

Its too harsh. Give them a two week quarantine in a comfier version of prison and make sure they arent around other inmates besides themselves.

You have to respect the laws of other countries, but these two dont deserve prison conditions for four months. Locking them in prison for four months youre possibly creating two new criminals once they leave.

But she's a Trump supporter so not being bright is par for the course.

Or maybe she should take advantage of those four months to try and pound some consideration for other people into that thick skull of hers. All she had to do was follow pandemic guidelines for the sake of public safety. If she can't even do that, it's better for her to be isolated from the vulnerable and law abiding public.

Reading the title and glancing over the first picture, made me think this topic was about one of the princesses.

And after the Greece situation, I completely believed that. (Just confused how Trump would figure into it...)

Edit: Also, any American seriously and fully answering no and agreeing with that wording, look into the Hague invasion Act.

Every time I see an American locked up for pretty much nothing in another country I just think, "how does America have so many more people in jail than the rest of the world when they get arrested for stupid shit like this?"

I mean you think somewhere where you can get arrested for wearing the wrong clothes or saying something bad about the government would have much higher incarceration rates
