9 years, no news. And I've seen various posts from self-described game developers discussing the impossibility of using the existing engine to make anything close to a modern game, as well as the monumental task of building a new engine from scratch.

So is it basically just fucked? I have no idea how developers can build a game over a 9 year period and it turn into anything coherent

They worked on Fallout 4 after Skyrim. Then Fallout 76 (shared with another studio) and they're currently developing Starfield.

So they haven't really started on it yet.

I think it's safe to say that's what it is. Howard says if you sit and play it you could probably tell it's a Bethesda game. These are some leaked screenshots. Looks pretty real to me but who knows.

Pretty sure they're still building on what they've got. Which isn't as big of a deal as some on the internet make it about to be really. All depends on what the final product is. Game engines are made up of several different systems and things.

It's in "Not started" development, I imagine. They have Starfield to do first and I guess Skyrim again on the new consoles.

It's one of the most played MMOs and offers a monthly sub option or you can drop 5-30 bucks on expansion packs as they come out. Pretty sure they're making some good cash off of that

Bethesda has a habit of not formally announcing their upcoming days until they're a year or less away from release; while it was effective for hype, the silence could indeed be maddening at times. I remember getting pretty damn hyped for those elaborate troll vids teasing Fallout 4 news about a year before Bethesda officially announced it. (not really relevant to the topic at hand, but I also remember a window of several years where people would wonder aloud if dragons would ever return to the ES universe, and of course lore purists would shoot them down hard for suggesting this).

Of course this was five years ago, when they were still a competent developer: nowadays this tactic comes off as a shy teenager doodling in his sketchbook and not wanting anyone to peek. I still have no idea why they announced ESVI so prematurely, other than to soften the blow of them announcing ES: Blades and FO76. They can't even get Creation Club content out nowadays without significant delays - to reiterate, they've been sitting on content in which someone else has done the work for them for over a year and they can't even be bothered to put together the game updates necessary to release it.

The past couple years have caused me to lose my faith in Bethesda's ability to deliver a game that will be worth the wait and secrecy.

They annouced it too early. Starfield is the game Bethesda is currently focusing on and probably little work has been done on ES6. It's annoicement was just to tell people it will happen one day.

And to be honest TES Online is better written and more interesting than most things Bethesda puts out lol

I liked fallout 4, apart from the whole voiced protagonist thing. Returning to something like that, removing the voice, and not repeat the abomination that is 76 would be great.

It makes me wonder how people get jobs writing for these things.

It's one of those things where I know for an absolute undeniable fact I could create more compelling plot progression given a storyboard. How do I get this job.

No ES game will top Skyrim. That's why Todd has been pimping it out for nearly a decade now. He knows.

Morrowind is better than Skyrim and it's 9 years older.

New game engine takes time to build and with newer graphics cards out now and consoles Im sure that takes some reworking to strengthen the look and performance of the game. Im positive a small team has been working on it all this time, but it was never the priority until next gen hardware came out.
