It is just that the constitution doesn't require the president to be elected in a democratic way(i.e. a state could decide to not have a presidential election and select their electors in a different way). Every state has however decided to have their electors chosen by votes. As long as they don't throw away their own rules, the electoral slate for each state will have been picked by the party that won the state(or in Maine and Nebraska parties that won state and districts). Each party is going to be picking people who are very likely to vote for the candidate of the party who picked them and some states have laws against faithless electors.
