But this has been a long drawn out agenda by SM. Even the not so secret fact they opted to have a remake of a song on their comeback schedule. Not to sound overly optimistic, but they were probably prepared for this...confusing reception.

I guess credit where it's due. No other artists are doing... this. Taste is one thing but they're seemingly very invested in the execution. It's so over the top.

Yeah if they were going to be so experimental, might as well just do something new and make it a little less awkward. Still, they had a perfectly fine song to work with and I think adding the vocals was great. If it had been just that I think it would have been perfect. But then they change the beat and by the time it's over for me at least I'm more underwhelmed than wowed. The song demands too much from the listener, but then really doesn't payoff that much. For comparison, an age ago when we got IGAB from SNSD the song was big enough that the changes felt good. Yes it was over the top but that's okay because the whole song was like that.

It's too bad because the girls are so good they actually pull the song off once you understand what they're doing, but there's such a thing as overdoing it to the point where you just look confusing and sloppy no matter how good you really are upon a closer look. At that point you really have to be into it from the beginning to really enjoy it, so maybe I just don't get it, but bottom line for me this style has never been my cup of tea to start with and there's too much good Kpop out there that I also actually like. Just give me my RV cb already.

I think to a lot of western audiences, this isn't overly impressive. Lyrically it's still a step above many other English K-Pop songs, but I think the required perspective is just knowing what it took to get this product. Concept and execution. Every member's pronunciation has improved. Meanwhile most stateside artists will never feel the need to figure out another language.

They're gonna pop 100m views 24hrs. Sheesh.

yeah, with how frequently taemin's been promoting i assumed they were trying to get in as much as possible because enlistment was impending, and now he's actually going.

agreed on 'don't ask don't tell'. i'm surprised they didn't keep riding the retro synthwave, but then again, despite all the praise i saw for it i don't know if it actually did better for them numbers-wise.

tbh the 80s trend is very high floor low ceiling for me - no one fucks it up too bad, but it mostly comes out the same even when it's good. like rocket punch's comeback was yet another decent one of those.

'first' is alright too, though it was ruined for me slightly when someone pointed out that the riff sounds like 12 days of christmas and now it's all i hear.

also, it kinda blows my mind that the biggest hit of the month is the song about kwangya and naevis or whatever. like i expect the sm scale fandom, but that feels incredibly niche.

I'm basically...here for it. The songs may not really stand the test of time (so far I can't say any will sit as my all time favorites), but I think the (outrageous) concept can stick, especially if SM does follow up with an actual app (and if that takes off). This stuff seems mega sleazy to our generation perhaps, but a connection between music, the virtual/avatar segment, and social media is something that very much explorable. And I think that's what early critics were missing. K'Da is tied more towards a game where Aespa seemingly is going to try something broader and standalone. But already, the K'Da concept and stuff like Post Malone having in-game (Pokemon) concerts have kinda got the ball rolling.

It is indeed weirder that Aespa literally sings about this weird crap, and I am personally annoyed as hell we don't seem to have anything resembling a live vocal performance of sorts (on radio shows it seems like they can sing). But I think the makeup of their aesthetic, branding, and talent can do a lot. There's so much uncertainty, but at the same time they've given a solid impression of being put together pretty well. It's so timely they come up in the "COVID era" where they don't even have to do a live tour anywhere.

a while back i was thinking how in 2005, SM debuted super junior 05 as a rotational group and was stopped dead in their tracks by the 'only 13' fan movement after a henry lau played a violin solo in don't don. last year they added 2 members to a 21 member line-up and said they're NCT now without missing a beat.

so whatever they're trying to do with ai avatars, i guess they'll figure it out eventually.

Sure enough they were timed right after the Itzy/NCT comebacks, but long grind for them and I felt they were really stretching out their last 2 promotions to try to win somewhere. They seemingly never gave any of their performances any lazy/dwindling effort either.
