I... hope not?

Shows like that were fine back in the day when you couldn't just stream whatever all the time and had to watch whatever was on TV, but like... why watch something like that in this day and age? >_>

I think it hits too close to home for some.

The show is ok and has some genuinely funny moments. It's not the best of all time but I don't think it was really trying to be.

Which is kind of how bullies operate. Doesn't matter if you're doing anything extra, but if you're the one targeted and people can convince others you are, that's the perception that is now popular.

The only people who watch the show are boomers who reference the show whenever anybody brings up anything even slightly geeky.

It's not going to age well. It even had a laugh track, which aren't really used anymore.

It may amongst the Zoomers huh.

It's not like the Big Bang Theory would be the first.

Happy Days was the Big Bang Theory of its day and there were people who actively hated the Fonz. None the less, it was deemed pop culture reference worthy up to the early 2000s, even if it was in some instances mocking it.

Theres one minority in the primary cast of BBT, and his ethnic status and Indian accent are punchlines. Two if you count Howard, but his Jewish identity is also nothing more than a cheap punchline. Plus 3 of the Friends are Jewish even though the show never explicitly states that Rachel is.
@radical_rhino since when was Rachel ever Jewish? Thats the first Im hearing of it

Shes a stereotypical Jewish American Princess.
  • Grew up on Long Island
  • Her dad is a doctor
  • Had a big nose before getting a nose job.
  • Rachel & Green arent uncommon Jewish names (Ive heard her last name was originally supposed to be Greenberg)
  • She has a Yiddish nickname for her grandma
  • probably other little clues I dont know about

Seinfeld will always be my favourite but I also think that show is on the wrong side of the age curve or the demographic curve. I don't think that show is going to land with today's kids. The Office is crushing it. Friends seems to be. Seinfeld will always skew a bit older. Maybe it's just something that you have to grow into, or it will just be destined to be the Generation X / Millenial type of show.

I think the relationship stuff in Friends is more relatable than the 'random' humour of Seinfeld. That's going to be the big driver for streaming these things. Chicks love that stuff. The Office too.

My rule of thumb is that most stuff coming out of broadcast TV ain't worth the time. Especially in the last 15 to 20 years. The good ideas have run their course and you're limited by what you can say or do on broadcast TV. It's hard to comprehend that people even watch modern sitcoms anymore. The innovation is happening on FX or HBO or streaming.

There are gems from back in the day that are still funny today if you happen to catch reruns or have boomer parents. You cannot tell me that Big Bang is funnier than Married With Children (cable show, FOX actually) with a straight ****ing face.

You also gotta keep in mind that the show ended in 2004. Network TV back then had a huge sway on the public. Friends was all over magazines and syndication. Jen was married to Brad. The internet was barely a thing yet. The finale put up Super Bowl ratings. I taped the damn thing on VHS.

We don't really have "appointment television" anymore. But back then it was normal. When you're talking 90's sitcoms for young people, that had to be at or near the top (Seinfeld is right there). People followed that journey from 1994 to 2004.

Tbf bbt is one of the last (maybe the last?) show to have this kind of feel. Not on the same scale, but relative to other shows it was really durable for network TV

woah woah woah. how were there a bunch of posts claiming people bully the big bang theory because it glorifies nerd culture. what on earth?

the reason big bang theory was hated online was because ITS THE BULLY OF NERD CULTURE. the show sets up punchlines of "character enjoys hobby". the show was basically "these guys are losers there have no idea how to interact with women but theyre going to eventually progress to the real world". it was definitely not a celebration of nerd culture. the "references" are pretty much surface level just naming "nerd" things (again often used for the punchline of "these guys are nerds"), not actually going into the fandoms/references. it was definitely not celebrating sheldon and those schmucks, it was laughing at them.

basically the exact opposite of nirvana the band the show which loved deep diving into the references of old movies without telling their audience.

I don't really get the nerd rage people have for BBT.

It's a slightly above average sitcom. Not amazing, but not terrible. Good to watch in the background.

I think the nerds that rage over it only really know about the sitcoms that are talked about online so compared to most of those it's bad.

But most of the random sitcoms that are on syndication on television are way, way worse. A shitload of them are still going for the whole 'lazy husband and nagging wife' routine.

I thought TBBT was pretty consistent and overall good throughout.

Leonard was always terrible though. Raj was pretty bad too, whenever he stopped being comic relief.

But Sheldon and Howard generally had good episodes and character development.

On a similar note, though I'm not following it as closely, Young Sheldon has been surprisingly good too.
