Streetfighter in 90s and 2000s had those beautiful sprites. As did mvc.

Street fighter 4 and beyond? Its 3d graphics. Wouldn't modern sprites look better?

HD screenspace puts an ungodly amount of pressure on companies that were already barely scraping by with spritework beforehand. KOF XIII's characters each took about a year and a half to animate, and even then, they were using 3D models as reference. Don't get me wrong, KOF XIII has some of the best spritework ever and it's absolutely jaw-dropping, but it's not sustainable.

Arc System Works has already shown that you can use 3D models to make a 2d fighter that looks like it uses incredibly high definition sprites, so there's little reason to go back anymore.

3d models are cheaper to make than paying Coke for sprites.

Sprites are hard to make, especially detailed ones where every frame needs to be drawn from scratch.

Models are easier since it's mainly just a matter of animating and reposing them, and they're also easier to make alternate costumes for (whereas sprites had to be completely redrawn again for those costumes).

Plus, advances in technology allow for models to look very, very close to high-quality sprites, as seen with the Arc System games.

When you see them side by side I think it's even more compelling case:
