Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

I don't really like the attitude of "this character has toonforce, therefore they can do anything" that's filled Bugs's matches. Fortunately, there are loads of other reasons to vote Bugs!

Seriously look at this. High control of hypnosis, master of disguise, lots of transmutation, meta-awareness, "Once dodged a gunshot from Elmer despite having his back turned." Stuff like this. Some of it is pretty specious at best, but there's plenty to beat Gambit, who probably shouldn't even be in Broken Tier.

Is this the finals of broken? Because I could totally buy Bugs losing the finals of broken to a guy who doesn't belong there after beating so many broken characters to be funnier than Bugs winning.

tbh I don't buy the argument that "Bugs wins because funny" - I think that's more a property of his cartoon universe. here, on neutral terrain, he only wins if he has the necessary power and combat skill and such.

having said that, I still don't get why Gambit is in broken (unless we're counting New Sun stuff, which seems like a temporary powerup)

Also, as a point against Bugs, IIRC he was incapable of defeating the Monstarrs in Space Jam, to the point where he needed freaking Michael Jordan to swoop in and save the day. That's a bad showing even when it "would be funny" for him to win.

I do not see any way that Bugs gets out of the canon of his last match, overcoming someone greater than the Lord, without every single other God coming to hilariously beat him up in his next match.

I give Bugs a lot less credit against guys willing to play along; I find him inversely powerful to how serious his competition is being, hence losing to the Monstars in basketball and Cecil in a footrace because there's less material to work with. And that he's probably the only character in Broken who'd have meta-continuity strapped to him, considering the self-referential nature of Looney Tunes shorts past the initial run.

Gambit just got the luckiest bracket draw possible. Do you know how long he's gonna have to think of funny ways to win while Bugs does an hours-long "is this your card" schtick?

I won't send it to anyone, but I will write it, believe me

I do agree that the "Bugs can do anything as long as it's funny" stuff has been overplayed but that doesn't discount all of the things he is able to do, like rewriting the battle's narrative so he wins in some goofy way

This is how I ran MPFC last time, and while it was a clusterfuck, it was a clusterfuck for reasons unrelated to the infrastructure of the contest, yeah.

Forgot exactly how yours went screwy but MPFC in general tends to go screwy for one reason or another for better or worse from what I can tell. That and potentially piss people off but that's the general nature of this thing.

I love the large neutral ground scene where they have to hunt each other

so many characters rely on planning/hunting in their actual works, and it always feels artificial and limiting that they can't do it in a typical mpfc

At first was thinking of an idea of a randomly generated battlefield but that might lead to lame outcomes with an entry getting put somewhere that beats them rather than who they are up against

I like the "part of the arena is suited to the fighter who starts there" thing but aside from that one guy who controls cities it hasn't come into play much

like why can't Harry start near Hogwarts and accio up his broom and whatever before setting out to fight

New Sun basically has total control over energy. He can take the potential energy in a person and make them explode. He can screw about with one kind of energy and make it into another (kinetic into microwaves, etc). He can change himself into energy and dimension hop along different wavelengths.

Scopewise, he killed the Phoenix and blew up a planet or three

there's just bugs having silly meta abilities that invalidate whatever Gambit can do here

Gambit. Rule of Funny being a double edged sword and such...also this was clearly Black Hat's plan to hand Gambit a pass to beat Bugs due to Gambit being too weak for this bracket. By extension, Gambit "winning" this is a joke at the expense of everyone else and that would be the most villainous thing to do for this on a meta level.
