easily Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had no charm and I feel that it will end up being forgotten as time goes on.

the only thing that stood out was Johnny Depp channeling Michael Jackson in his portrayal of Willy Wonka.

The original movie costs purely off of nostalgia. The first part of the movie where they were trying to locate the golden tickets was both boring and fell flat when it came to humor.

So wrong. You need some normal scenes so when you see the factory it stands out.

In the new movie, even the outside world is twisted and Burton-ified which makes the factory nothing special.

I'm curious to know what chocolate sales were like after the original movie came out
The movie was only made because Quaker Oats funded it to advertise a new chocolate bar. While they fucked up by not getting the recipe right, their candy subsidiary was renamed to the Willy Wonka Candy Company.

When I saw it as a kid, the horror-boat ride where the chicken was decapitated didn't get that big of a response. Nowadays, you can see reaction of videos of kids about the same age start crying over it. (Were we tougher back then?)

The Tim Button one was more faithful to the source material, so it seems a little silly to claim he fucked it up.

That said, I prefer the original, and definitely prefer the more subtle depiction of Wonka's eccentricity.

The original is only great because of Gene. Everything else about it feels subdued.

To be clear, I like them both. I just think the remake works better as a kids movie, whereas the original works better for people who grew up with it.

The Burton one had some improvements to the story (expanding on Wonka and Charlies families, showing what happened to the kids who were eliminated, tying Grandpa Joes knowledge of the factory into his knowledge of Wonka) but the original one is of course instant nostalgia

I think people who hate the 2005 one needs to watch it again; apparently its more accurate to the books

It attempted to try and humanize an otherwise overly eccentric candymaker in exchange for making Charlie and Joe a lot less dickish compared to the original movie. Id say it worked out well
