It was 95% a catfish

The only part of the story that never fully came out was Manti saying he had never actually met the girl after all the catfishing stuff came out, but members of his family saying they had. By that point the story was done though so nothing came from it iirc. Popular theory is it was the catfishing guys female cousin pretending, but he claims to have done it all on his own.

who cares though, what a complete fall from grace. Heisman moment into laughing stock of football, getting bamas nuts dragged all over his face, and then nfl bust

In some somber and tragic NCAA news, freshman RB from Utah has passed away. His name was Ty Jordan. Apparently it was an accidental gunshot that killed him.

In some more positive NCAA news, D'eriq King of the Hurricanes will stay in Miami another year. Makes his 6th year of college football. Additionally, Javonte Williams, 1/2 of the phenomenal rushing attack of the NC Tarheels has declared for the draft. A team with good run blocking could certainly use him.

Mid-majors can't win either way. They lose and they are terrible. They win and the P5 team was unmotivated or wasn't one of the good teams.

It's never going to change though because money. TV want the big name teams and so do bowl games for money purposes. P5 don't want to let those teams into a P5 conference because they have to split the money pot more ways. And they don't want to schedule those teams because they don't want to risk the upset without having it be like a 2 and 1 or 2 and neutral.

For the most part P5 teams are better but the system is fucked up. We'll never be allowed to know if those teams could have hung with the Top 4 because they would have to go unbeaten for like 3 straight years and then still need upsets to get a chance. And by that point their players have cycled out into the pros so who knows if the unbeaten team in Y1 or Y2 was better than the current iteration.

And of course because college football is so political and the schedules are set up so far in advance, you can't even do something like a forced tie-in game to start the season so that we know off the bat whether a G5 team is any good.

I think in an ideal world there would be a game early season in like week 1 or week 2 where the G5 winners and runners up got paired up with the P5 winners and runners up.

You went undefeated last season? Cool, your reward is a Week 1 or 2 match up with Alabama/Clemson/Ohio State. So you now have a route into consideration. Win that game (or keep it very close) and win out and you now can compare against the 1-2 loss P5 teams.

the problem is that the Power 5 teams don't want to do it because, again, there's no benefit for them to play these teams

this is why we need an 8 team playoff and set aside a spot for the highest ranking non-P5 team if they finish high enough like the BCS used to do

either way, they need to change something because the current system is broken when the 4 playoff teams every year are some combination of Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Oklahoma taking up 3 of the slots

That's like saying the NCAAB was broken because UCLA won the championship 11 years in a row. Or because UCONN won however many in a row. Or because whatever or so on team was too dominant.

The system is to have the best teams play. If those teams earn it every year, they should be there. It's flawed, but not for the reasoning you gave imo.

the basketball tournaments are more inclusive so if UCLA and UConn still win at the end of the day, at least you can't complain teams didn't have a shot

the problem is that it feels like those four have an inherent advantage over everyone else and don't need to do as much to get in, as Ohio State demonstrated this year

I mean Oklahoma finished 6th this year ahead of Cincinnati and they sucked
You do have a shot. Schedule stronger opponents and win. The problem is that it's schedule stronger opponents and lose and not have a chance or not schedule better and not have a chance because others did better in conference.

Oklahoma would probably beat Cincinnati by 50.

literally impossible this year and very unlikely most years because the biggest programs don't want to schedule the best mid-majors because there's nothing to be gained from it

and the schedules are made so far in advance that what you think is a good game when you schedule it now isn't a good game when that team sucks 5+ years from now

and very unlikely this year but the fact that you assume it and the committee probably assumes it too is part of the issue here

They can try and schedule whoever they want. The kicker is that these schools purposely don't try to schedule the supposed top dogs. And, if they were to beat the top dogs, they probably aren't that year precisely due to the fact they could beat them.

You forget when Boise St and TCU used to schedule powerhouses when they were in 2nd tier conferences. UCF the year they went like 12-1 played Penn State (who they beat) and lost to South Carolina. The year before that they played Ohio State. Then the year after the 12-1 season they lost to Penn State, NC State, and Missouri from scheduling hard. Thus, they stopped for awhile. Which led to years later them going 13-0 with a weak non-conference due to scaling back their opponents. They played Maryland in the big ten. Florida International and a sub Div 1AA opponent. Again... its the chicken and the egg scenario above. If they scheduled harder they would have made it but if they scheduled harder they likely would have had losses.

Because the P5 make it difficult to schedule the better G5 teams. Like how can you fault UCF when shit like this happens

UCF tries to schedule Florida
Florida will only agree to a 2 and neutral
UCF offer 1 and 1, 1 and neutral or a one off game at Florida or neutral
Florida won't agree to it
Florida then go agree 1 and 1s or home games with weaker G5 schools

Like come on. And that happens all the time. UCF tries to schedule the P5 teams, P5 teams only offer them really shitty deals before then scheduling other G5 teams with way more favorable deals because those teams are shit and there's zero risk of losing

The point is the big teams won't play them. They offer ridiculous terms of they even engage in discussions at all and then agree to far lesser terms with worse, less lucrative G5 teams so you know it isn't about money, it's that they are scared of losing to them so won't offer a reasonable deal.

The only reason Cincinnati has been able to schedule good teams is because all those fixtures were agreed when Cincinnati was bad. It will be a lot harder to get good teams to play them now

Cincy being ranked as low as they are this year is just another reminder that the current playoff is Power 5-only. At the very least they could expand it to 6, and say the top 4 P5 champs get in + 1 at-large + highest Group of 5/independent. I don't think anyone would cry about Oregon being left out, and there's almost always at least one P5 champ outside the Top 10.

Should be top 8, done by old bcs standards. No personal input. Each major conference gets an AQ, top non major gets a bid, and the rest are done by bcs computers.
