Police in New York City arrested two men who they say attacked workers at a Trader Joe's after they were told they had to wear masks in the store. The men entered a Trader Joe's store on East 32nd Street at about 8:50 p.m. on July 14, a police spokeswoman said. Several employees told police that they asked the men to leave the store because they refused to wear masks to protect against the spread of the coronavirus, the spokeswoman said. Police said the men, John Carrero and Alejandro Escobar, both 34, refused to leave and pulled a mask off the face of one of the employees. Police said that Carrero hit a 22-year-old female employee in the head with a paddle and that Escobar then said he would return to the store with a firearm, which police said caused "fear and alarm to employees and customers inside of the store." After leaving the store, Escobar struck a store window with a chair in an attempt to regain entry, police alleged. Carrero and Escobar each face charges including disorderly conduct, harassment and criminal trespassing. A spokeswoman for Trader Joe's, Kenya Friend-Daniel, said eight store employees "suffered some sort of injury," including at least one worker who was treated at a hospital.

She said all of the employees at the store not just those who were working on the evening of July 14 were given the opportunity to temporarily transfer to another Trader Joe's location or to receive paid time off. "They all said that they wanted to continue to work and were fine," she said. Trader Joe's has since hired a security guard at the store. "We are extremely grateful that everyone is OK and they're back at work and it isn't worse," Friend-Daniel said, adding that "the incident was unfortunate enough." She said the company, which is cooperating with the investigation, does not believe the incident was triggered by a request to wear a mask. "We feel there was a different motivation behind it, such as wanting to start some trouble," she said. Other charges against Carrero, of New York, include second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Escobar, a resident of the Bronx, is also charged with menacing. They were released on their own recognizance and are due in court Oct. 13.

I am seriously asking that - what did the Democrats do that encouraged these two men to attack Trader Joe staff? I didn't ask about the after effect of bail reform. Cops have NOT been told to stand down in other Republican states, and yet people in Texas etc still attack store employees, so that can't be a common thread.

Because a combination of effects have caused crime, especially random crime, to shoot up in NYC because of Blasio and by extension, because of some things with Cuomo.

It says in the article this wasn't about masks. They were just looking to start shit.

A few points:
A) I completely agree that crime/poverty is a multifaceted issue, but disagree that all the blame rests on Blasio/Cuomo.
B) They were looking to create a scene - how does that tie into crime? One says he wanted to record a Youtube video. How is that the result of Democrats?

They are the ones who did the bail reform, removed the anti-crime unit in NYC, and released prisoners from jail among several other changes.

Meanwhile, Cuomo refuses to legalize weed, which probably ruins more lives of poor minorities than saving a bunch of violent people from being stuck without bail.

I don't even know what you mean by this? It's not a crime to beat up 8 people because their intention was to YouTube it?

Look at the outcome. Several serious charges that would have kept them in jail till their court date, instead they're back out, probably laughing their asses off. Probably try to make some more videos in the meantime assaulting people.

Honestly, if you're not from the areas of NYC that are affected by this right now, like the hoods of Brooklyn and the Bronx, you don't really have an opinion on how everybody here is scared of this spike and how criminals, which I know of many unfortunately, are happy as fuck.

This is why you hear often hear reports of store management telling their employees to not engage non-mask wearers even if it is the rule. It opens up employees to increased risk of violent confrontation which obviously nobody wants. A Trader Joe's employee sure as hell did not sign up to get in a physical altercation.

It's the same reason why employees are encouraged to not confront shoplifters and instead inform management.

Yeah but it happened in the states. There should be a law that allows employees to shoot anyone who refuses to wear a mask. Less risk of covid, and one less republican in the world.

Most of NY is under Democratic control.

It can be attributed to them because they are the ones with the policy changes that have lessened or relieved the consequences of acting like this.

Then as most of the country is under Republican control (POTUS, Senate, governors), we can attribute things them as a result of them lessening consequences?

To be clear, I'm pointing out the fallacy here (not claiming the statement is true) as you have taken a multifaceted event (people becoming aggressive in a store) and somehow only found fault with ONE possible factor (them knowing ahead of time that consequences are lesser)

Uh, yeah, there are parts of the country in the shitter because of Republicans. New York and New York City is because of Democrats. Not a hard concept. Democrats are just less bad, doesn't mean that's a good thing.

I'm not sure where you're trying to go with this insistence on bringing up Republicans.

I'm not sure why you're being disingenuous. No one is saying it's just that one thing. I'm saying there's a crime spike in NYC and it's because of the several really bad policy changes by the government.

This specific scenario doesn't even have to be used as an example. It's a fucking shit fest over here and there's no Republicans around to be blaming, so please, stop.
