I understand if you are a PC gamer, switch gamer, non gamer, but is the smart function of HDTV's really needed otherwise?

No. In most cases, the smart TV apps are slower than they are on the consoles.

Pretty sure yes but not positive major manufacturers bother with them anymore. I know in the last year or two Ive seen smaller new lcds for cheap at retailers. And of course you can get lcd tvs or tv monitors at (some) thrift stores or pawn shops.

I got a gaming/streaming setup in my room with a recent 20 inch pc monitor that you can plug in for sound. Just trade out hdmi between my Apple TV, gaming console, and blu ray player as needed.

No but it seems to be the standard. My smart TV takes forever to connect to the Internet and runs streaming apps much slower than the PS4 does so I never use those features.

I like not having to turn on my console for playing something like a YouTube video on screen. But my Xbox is plugged ivy ethernet so it's better for 4k streaming.

Smart TVs tend to be slower with app-specific support than dedicated streaming devices and/or game consoles.

wait, smart tvs still have slow apps? it's not like they should take a lot of processing power. i remember a few years ago when looking around that the smart tvs were still sluggish. open netflix, wait a minute for it to boot up, try to scroll around, lag on every action. i'm surprised it hasn't improved

ngl the outdated Netflix app that's baked into my SmartTV actually performs a LOT better than the modern app that I use through my Fire Stick.

I watch everything on that old app. I don't notice any difference in visual quality, though the audio quality is a little lower. But it's worth it, don't have to worry about the show stopping and skipping every episode.

Theyll always have slow apps because the TV itself will outlast the software. The average TV probably lasts like 10 years or longer. Imagine still using a 10 year old Roku player.

I'm not.
Token "smart" functionality is all but obligatory, or your "dumb" TV will be ignored in favor of the one next to it on the shelf. Better to toss in maybe $10 of parts, and just half-ass it.

Never go smart if you're gonna hook stuff up to it tbh.

It's annoying enough for your device to have a home screen you have to navigate, let alone for your TV to have its own.

no not needed. consoles keep the basic apps. smart tvs/roku/fire tv have way more options but majority you'll never use. but that's pretty much if you're getting a used tv. it's hard to find anything new that isn't smart. it's getting harder to find anything that isn't 4k now.

Thanks for the answers guys, I was looking to see if it was a good idea just to look for a new TV that doesn't have the smart options to save money. However it sounds like that's not going to be a viable option, and even if I did find one without it I would be saving only a handful of dollars.

Depends on size. Like 32 TVs are mostly 720p and 1080p still.

The only app I've used on my smart TV is Disney+, but that was because the app was broken on PS4 for a long time. It would freeze the image but keep playing the audio and then fast forward the image to catch up to the audio. Like every 20 seconds. Every other device ran the app just fine.

I forget that it's a smart TV most of the time. I only bought it because it was a 65 inch 4k for under $300.
