The Gold Coast city council has erected a 700-metre barricade along the Queensland-NSW border in the hopes of stopping people illegally bypassing border checkpoints.

Police said they had seen some instances of drivers coming from the NSW side crossing over a grass road verge in an attempt to enter Queensland.

The actions have led to significant traffic drama in local backstreets, adding to the frustration of locals.

"I am feeling pretty distraught at the moment as a local resident having to put up with this daily grind 24 hours a day," one woman said.

"Pretty over it, just the general chaos with the roads always having to think where I drive every afternoon," another said.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has also suggested the border be moved seven kilometres south into NSW to stop the bottlenecks.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she spoke to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian about the idea and said she rejected it.

Member for Tweed Geoff Provest said that conversation had not happened.
"I just find it just crazy. I spoke to our premier, Gladys Berejiklian, she has not heard from the premier of Queensland at all," he said.

Earlier today Ms Palaszczuk said long queues to get into Queensland would likely remain for months.

She said there was "no other way" to keep Queenslanders safe from Victoria and New South Wales where coronavirus cases are rising.

"This is what the police have put in place," Ms Palaszczuk told Today. "We have been working very closely with (Queensland) Health as well and we have to make these checks."

One of the suggestions was to use traffic cameras to catch drivers trying to enter the state. But Ms Palaszczuk appeared to reject that idea in favour of the current method of checking licences.

"I want to keep Queensland as safe as possible so we have to do it," she said. "There is no other way."

Queensland reopened its borders on July 10 to all states and territories except Victoria, due to the rising number of coronavirus cases there.
Residents from some suburbs within New South Wales are also prohibited after they were deemed COVID-19 hotspots.

It comes as health authorities have revealed a single super spreader from Melbourne is responsible for 34 cases of COVID-19 stemming from his visit to the Crossroads Hotel in Casula on July 3.

Anyone who has been in the Liverpool and Campbelltown government areas in the past 14 days will not be able to enter Queensland.

Queenslanders who have travelled through those government areas will be allowed entry but required to enter hotel quarantine.

But Ms Palaszczuk has ruled out closing the borders to everyone as coronavirus cases surge south of the state.

"We're not factoring that in at the moment because we're very happy with the checks that are happening at the border," Ms Palaszczuk said. "There are delays. We are trying to make it easier for those border communities. "We've increased our testing of course across Queensland and we have almost finished the testing of the people who did attend that Crossroads Hotel (in Sydney's south-west) so I think there's just one outstanding test there."

The current maximum penalty for breaking the border rule is a $4003 fine.

The state government is also upping the ante on rule breakers.

Legislation which is expected to pass parliament later this week will see anyone who breaches a COVID health directive (such as a false border declaration) face possible imprisonment for up to six months.

But a wall around the border wouldnt help that. Thats internal problems. Isnt Australia already a giant island?

It was but we built a little wooden bridge that you can walk there from LA. Ships keep snapping the fucking thing but they got a crew on hand to tie it back up.

Queensland is the American South of Australia, after all.

Seriously though, this is fine. When Victoria had a coronavirus flare-up, a bunch of people crossed over into NSW before they closed down the borders and reinstituted lockdown procedures. At least one of those fucks was infected with coronavirus himself, and it created another outbreak here in NSW.

I don't blame Queensland for putting up a barricade to prevent people from crossing state lines illegally, considering the circumstances that we're living in. And hey, even though QLD is typically characterised as a bunch of crazy conservatives (what other state would give Pauline Hanson and Fraser Anning a platform?), this barricade isn't because "southern Australians are sending their worst, they're sending rapists and thieves" - it's because dumb fucks keep breaking lockdown procedures and infecting other people with coronavirus, and no-one wants another flare-up.

This.
However I think the rest of the country will inevitably go through a second wave. It's possibly happening in NSW, QLD have recorded that people who were meant to be quarantining were out and about.
It's just that Victoria is doing a shitload more testing. Not to mention the security guard fuck up didn't help and potentially sparked the whole thing.

That seems like the unfortunate reality of it right now. Regardless, we should definitely do everything we can to prevent a wider spread at the moment. Best case scenario, the virus stops here. Worst case scenario, the spread isn't as bad as it would have been if we took no action.

Full stage 3 lockdown with mandatory masks. No visitors allowed at home.
Though some of rules are bullshit. Apparently you're allowed to see a romantic partner but I can't even have one friend over even if I live alone?

QLD is more like Australias Alabama than Florida. I guess the Gold Coast is Florida. Anything out of the south east corner is Alabama or Texas
