Not sure, I don't have the bow yet so I haven't even had a chance to kill a non-predator.

But I feel like I wouldn't be missing anything if I couldn't be attacked by feral hogs while running through the country side. They're just as bad as the ones in Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

It's all optional just like if you were to encounter random bandits and mongols fighting each other. You get nothing out of it progression-wise but they are resource fodder.

The_Scarecrow posted...
I just killed a bear and got the same reward. I'm still not sure what "predator hides" are for. Possibly for crafting purposes is my guess.

I just upgraded my bow with predator hides so that's what they're for it seems. Same thing goes for the throwing knives.

Oh man the Heavenly Strike is badass. Seems like the more skills and techniques you learn, the more fun the game becomes.

I need to check out that Mythic Tale involving Heavenly Strike. So far, I've just been doing side quests and exploring the open world. There are a lot of collectibles in this game. Combat is becoming more fun as Jin gains more abilities but it's becoming much easier, too. Hard mode isn't a challenge anymore as of right now.

Yeah, the game is much too easy. Played on hard mode from the start and I died a bit much at the start getting used to the system, but for the last many hours the only proper challenge has been the boss I fought at Tadayori's Rest.

You weren't kidding about Tadayori's Rest. Kaede obliterated me the first fight. Managed to win the second try.

Are there towns with merchants and a working economy? How about random encounters?

Yes, there are multiple towns in the game with working economies. You'll come across small camps where you can trade and buy goods as well. Random encounters are in the game. You could be riding around on horseback and see a group of enemies. It's beneficial to engage as they drop items and you could pick up side objectives from saving random peasants. You are also free to ignore random enemies if you choose. Most random encounters do not take very long especially as you unlock more combat options. A group of 6-8 enemies may take nearly two minutes in the beginning of the game but after some several hours on unlocking new abilities, you'll finish them within 30 seconds.

Oh man. This has me excited and I am now debating just dropping the dough for it. Appreciate the response.

Oh--how is the atmosphere and music? Is it something I can catch a nice buzz and just get immersed in? Is there a lot side content?

Sorry for the 21 Questions!

The atmosphere is great. It really feels like the island of Tsushima has been invaded by Mongols. Sucker Punch nailed that aspect of the game. If you like old samurai films, Kurosawa Mode is a must try as it's in complete black and white and it adds a film grain effect. In a pure 1v1 situation, it shines the most.

Music is also superb and stands out. Every track fits perfectly for the scenario it plays in. I usually don't care for too many Western game soundtracks but this one is quite good. It'll definitely immerse you.

As for the side content, there is a lot to do in this game. I've been playing for around 13 hours and I haven't finished exploring even half of the first region of the map. There are three regions in total. There are so many side quests you can do. When reviewers said that this game would take over 50 hours to fully complete, I believe it. The side quests are fairly good especially the Mythic Tales. This open world game doesn't have the issue of boring fetch quests being 90& of the content.

Tagging this topic as Im considering a buy

Is this more like ten zillion hours of content on a freakishly large map open world or closer to an Arkham game where its still fairly big but more focused?

Hm, I would say it's closer to that of an Arkham game. There are many side quests scattered throughout the map along with main story missions. The rate at which these side quests pop up feels natural as you have to engage with NPCs in town or save random peasants in the open world to activate more quests. Exploration is a big focus of the game as well. However, there are a lot of collectibles if you're into that and the map is incredibly large but I haven't felt overwhelmed so far. That may be due to other regions of the map being locked off until the story is progressed.

You could probably 100% the game in 50-60 hours or so.

Kinda like the Metal Gear Rising fight with Raiden and Jetstream Sam. You block and strike with perfect timing until you give up out of boredom.

I watched a few more gameplay vids last night. Seems good. I still need to get GoW to play and possibly DMC5 so this is something I'll eventually check out. Since I got back into gaming late I have tons of titles I could play and they are typically under $20. I'll have to hold off for a while on this game.

I'm finding the stealth gameplay very boring. While dispatching the same few enemies the same way over and over again isn't exactly the most breathtaking experience either, there's some sort of satisfaction to engaging with the flow of the combat rather than just crouch up to an enemy and press the square button (or triangle if there are several enemies, which I always fuck up and press square for instead).

I don't know why, but being stealthy in Sekiro feels immensely more satisfying despite it effectively being the same concept and a very similar execution.

Few questions as I'm still on the fence:

Are there any RPG elements with this game?

What game would you compare the environment and open world with? Dark Souls? The Witcher 3?

Does the combat compare to anything like Sekiro or Nioh 2? Nioh 2's combat was incredible and hard to beat in my opinion.

Yes. There are skill trees and all that progression stuff.

In terms of scale and travel, The Witcher 3. The lighting and particle effects as well as atmosphere are obviously better than W3.

Simplified versions of both, but they're geared towards an enjoyable fighting experience than an overcoming one.

I mean Wild Hunt is an extraordinary RPG but yeah the controls and animations weren't on par because CDPR still used the same archaic engine from Witcher 2. Whereas Ghost of Tsushima I think runs on some Sony-provided in-house engine that bears alot of similarity to Uncharted 4, cuz the traversal animations are very very similar.

The game desperately needs the ability to make equipment sets that you can easily equip. I never fight in anything other than my traveller's clothes because most of my time is spent exploring and I can't just be bothered to sit down and change all my gear (and all my glam, cause the swordmaster's hat I use just doesn't go with the Tadeyori armour!) and then remember what charm setup I had before the fight so I can change back to it afterwards.

Exactly. That would be very nice. Ive gathered so many charms that its tedious having to constantly shift around. Load outs or customizable sets would be awesome.

I've also noticed the sorting of the equipment is pretty bad. Like, hats that are just recolours of each other should be next to each other. I don't care if some of them are found and others are from armour upgrades.

But more significantly I've noticed that it's possible to have two identical charms that aren't sorted next to each other, and I'm having horrible Mass Effect 1 inventory PTSD every time I see it.
