Neutral? I think it doesn't matter at all. I'd do it if it meant a lot to my partner tho.

Somewhat negative. After all, half of all marriages end in divorce and the other half in death >_>

(And divorce can be more painful than death, especially in the US)

Neutral. I think the idea is good and all if you want a family, but if both spouses aren't fit for it or each other, it sucks

And the results are pretty much the faults of the involved

60% of marriages end in divorce, but that includes all marriages. Only 35% of FIRST marriages end in divorce

You're working with old stats. You may be pleasantly surprised to know that we're closer to 40% now.

Probably due to less people getting married for the wrong reasons like an accidental pregnancy

Idk. I've been happily married for 7 years. But literally nothing changed from pre-wedding life other than we were thousands of dollars poorer.

I don't regret getting married at all but I can definitely understand why people would be fine with just dating forever. It's not like you can't do all the married things when you're not married. Can still buy a house together and all that shit.

Negative. I was married and came out of it very well off - clean break, we both put equal money into our things we had to split and we split that 50-50. I got very lucky.

I dont believe i will be happy with the same person for my whole life. But thats just me

It depends on the parameters and goals of said marriage.

I don't think highly of the notion of a monogamous marriage wherein each partner tries to satisfy every need of the other until death do they part. It's great on paper and if you can make it work, more power to you, but I think that's a recipe for failure.

One of the most striking aspects of being adult is coming to realize how many people I know tried to go for the long haul and suffered through crappy relationships for bad reasons. Too many people try to force square pegs into round holes because they think that's the way it's "supposed" to be because they've been conditioned to believe this very stodgy and stifling idea of what the ideal relationship is. Not even considering the more serious problems of abuse and infidelity or a hail mary baby to keep things together, that situation would be hell to suffer through.

At least one of isn't happy, it's hard work, there's no end in sight because I boldly declared to the world my intention to stick this out to the bitter end like I was Nostradamus and now I'm stuck? Fuck all of every last bit of that.

I would never engage in that kind of marriage, but I am more open-minded than I used to be about other arrangements. A 3-5 year commitment to strengthen financial standing is something I would consider with the right person. I know lots of people who weren't in love and didn't really even have any serious attraction but still got married for insurance, to pool resources or clean up their credit, have a secure place to live, etc. Both people knew what the relationship was about and used marriage to their benefit, and I think that's beautiful.

I'm also open to a kind of situation where feelings are involved, but without the whole "1+1 = 4ever in love" type stuff. I would only feel compelled to marry someone who made me confident we don't need to be married for our relationship to last and endure. Someone who could just enjoy the ride for however long it lasted instead of cling to some foolhardy plan to make it last indefinitely is imo an ideal candidate for a marriage partner.

Marriages are to encourage a stable home for men to have motivation to contribute to society due to their responsibility of caring for their wives and women to have security while raising their kids and kids reap all the benefits of having both parents front and center in their lives. For this baseline reason, marriage is an immense boon.

Negative. It's just a all around bad deal due to its laws that can potentially screw over a person for years, decades or life even financially.

Dont get me wrong when it works, it works, but its just nor worth it.
