Ah yeah, nothing like slaying the lvl 2 rats just outside the starting village for three hours just so you can finally have a chance to not be brutally slain by the lvl 4 slugs in the adjacent forest.

You realize you're a rat pulling a lever, yet you still want to pull the lever.

I do like progress. That's why I generally prefer roguelites to roguelikes

That's why I kind of like RTS, you can feel powerful and progress through the levels and unlock new mechanics and units and stuff and there's usually a story. And that's it.

Also why I'm intimidated by FFXIV or the endgame of things like Division 2 where you're supposed to just replay the same content over and over again in the hopes of finding better gear.

Chrono Cross and Paper Mario: Sticker Star, off the top of my head. More games should strive for it, though.

I just get really bored/frustrated whenever there is nothing to strive for.

Divinity: Original Sin 2.

enemies don't re-spawn, so you also have to explore the world as much as you can, do quests, discover areas, etc. to gain experience and level up.

how loose is grinding to you?

Does collecting all the music notes in Banjo Kazooie count?

Or unlocking all the squares on the Wind Waler map?

Well, a little grind is ok as long as there's incentive for it beyond increasing some numbers.

For example:
Farming for moderately uncommon drops (FF7)
Skill rankings for the encounter and some sort of bestiary or reward that proves it (MMBN)
There are actually decent things to buy and they actually balanced the pricing and drop rates correctly so that you won't just have gobs of money (Golden Sun)
Each encounter teaches you something about the game's combat, so it's also practice in addition to grind (Child of Light)

It's just that these tend to be the exception rather than the rule.

There are so many games with grinding, you think developers just hate us all?

I always assumed they either use it to pad for the almighty hrs/$ figure that is the only damn thing gamers care about anymore, or they use it as DDA and just screwed up the balance.
