had + past participle is the Past Perfect.

So they had had ______ is a perfectly valid construction, and its not even that uncommon.

This article poses an interesting conundrum but I'm way too drunk/inherently fucked up to decipher the nuances behind it, can someone tl;dr this for a disabled alcoholic over here???

Its correct, but theres no reason at all you wouldn't turn "they" into "they'd" to omit the awkward second "had"

James, while John had had had, had had had had; had had had had a better effect on the teacher.

Two kids are writing a paper for school. One uses had, one uses had had.. The teacher like had had better.

"They'd", or contractions in general, are less formal, so while it's correct it's not desirable in various contexts.

Depending on what you're saying.

If they just walked in the room looking all singed and worn out, and everyone is staring, and you happen to know they just fought a lava monster and decide to inform your companions, then yes, you would only use one had.

If you were the narrator, and the story takes place in the past, and you were informing the audience about their scuffle with the lava monster, then you would use both.
