California was one of the first states to shit down, I think they were actually the first. They've also said and done the right things, it just hasn't worked out for them. I think it's a case of this virus being unpredictable, even being smart about it doesn't help, you need luck too.

Though I will say I've heard California mentioned a lot. No not as much as Florida or Texas, but about as much as Arizona.

California wasn't a darling to the Redpillers who desperately wanted to promote Texas and Florida closing late / reopening early as some kind of definitive proof that liberals trashed the economy over a hoax.

DeSantis basically said everyone owes him an apology. He bragged about how well Florida was doing. He made tons of shit that didn't need to open open. He made pro wrestling essential.

Then you have Texas, the place where the lt governor went on TV saying old people want to be sacrificed.

Whatever you have to say about Newsome he didn't make an ass out of himself or go out of his way to fuck up his state. Plus large chunks of California are red, so this slant isn't going to fly just because it is technically blue. The blue parts tend to be the cities, and those are densely populated which means they're fucked with this virus until it passes.

Texas and Florida's governors made a lot of noise about how they were boldly opening early and getting back to work. They made their early reopening deliberately political.

They (the governors) deserve to pay the political price for the gamble they made.

The guy who made that article responded to this argument in the second tweet.

Therefore it's okay to ignore surges in Democratic states because their governors aren't as arrogant as DeSantis Abbott etc?

Outside of the protests wasn't California doing pretty well until the last few weeks? It's the most populous state. It's expected that their count would be high. Republicans have been a lot more vocal about it being a hoax and not wanting to wear masks. The numbers could have been lower by the thousands if people would have taken the lockdowns and testing seriously.

How do the numbers per capita work out? California has a population of ~40 million whereas NY and Florida are only ~20 million each.

The gross irresponsibility of Republicans during this crisis can be summarized with this one single fact:

The first time Donald Trump wore a mask in public was two days ago.

Compare per capita, it really is the best kind of statistic when comparing how populations are faring.

California is doing far better by that metric.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Is that actually a thing?

California has the highest proportion of uneducated people out of any US state.

Texas is bad too.

So they both deserve the rep of being the stupid states.

Just horribly mismanaged.

Alright so here's the bad news, the initial census upload was removed when they reworked their website, something like Wayback should have it but it is not loading for me so I'm not sure if you want to try that.

While that site (which I just used because it was one of the first that came up) I'm sure does have a bias on other things this was reporting on data released by the US census, Wikipedia actually still has that data uploaded if you would like to view that, although that site also has bias issues, as I'm sure you are aware.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_educational_attainment

As I don't want to repeatedly post different websites which reported on it and get rejected for the sites being biased, I would encourage you to look for a source that you like that reported on the Census information. I think we would all be happy then.

The US education system fell pretty rapidly since the 90's. I'm not actually sure why and have done very little research on the subject, but the US used to have one of the best education systems in the entire world. It has just gotten poor in the past two decades, although maybe something like not great is a better description, the US is still better than most of the world, it has just been completely removed from the competition to be the best.

I'm from New York, so my state gets a lot of hate (although I'm pretty sure that reputation is pretty well deserved in terms of rudeness and stuff especially in NYC)

But California just constantly seems to be doing weird stuff, it gets the kind of "Florida man" style stories in the news all the time.

California's plan was to slow down the pandemic enough so that their hospitals wouldn't be overrun. Then they would use the 20 billion windfall to acquire more beds and ventilators so they would be prepared by the time the pandemic was in full force. After that, things would be reopened in stages. If the hospitals start getting crowded, then there would be a partial rollback to an earlier stage until more hospital beds clear up.

We were in stage 2, where restaurants, beaches, and parks would be reopened, but with only limited occupancy and with social distancing and masks still enforced. For example, when the pro-wrestler Shad of Cryme Tyme drowned, people were not allowed to sunbathe, but they could walk the beach and go into the water as long as they were following social distancing.

Unfortunately, the governor has very little power over municipal governments. For example, Newsom had to ask Malibu's mayor to close their beaches since Malibu's law enforcement would be the ones enforcing it. The only thing the governor can do short of marshal law is to threaten to withhold state funds. This may scare poorer areas, but wealthy upscale Republican areas like Orange County and Ventura County have enough money to ignore him.

TL;DR : California's governor has very little power over the cities, and the cities are acting on their own based on political party lines.

SoCal is doing horrible with social distancing. My block in LA had to have at least 100 people on it in the 4th of July without masks. I think those 4th parties are going to kill us. Huge parties everywhere.

Orange and Ventura counties are choosing to ignore guidelines entirely. I go to Ventura a lot, and I see tons of people without masks. Both places benefit from less people, but I'm guessing it will catch up to them.

Im not sure how SD is doing because I don't really go there or know anyone there.

I think the the government is doing a fairly good job with messaging and policy (aside from opening early). People are selfish seems to be the driving issue.
