Got about five or six missions in on Authentic and realized there are achievements for doing Authentic Plus with no manual saves, so I figured I'd give it a go.

First mission kicked my ass, spent probably 3-4 hours yesterday trying to beat it and then today did it in 2:05.

Did the second mission on the first try, 51 minutes wtf.

It feels really good with the HUD and everything turned off, just really keeps you on your toes (and keeps the pace slow af). Got into a shoot out with three guys in a bush, I ran away, was waiting for them to come out of the bush and down the road so I could pop them... after a couple minutes I pulled out the binoculars and started trying to tag enemies in the area and found out it was just corpses. WASTED TWO MINUTES but it was still unexpected.

Can't hit shit over 250 m reliably though.

Is there a stat for that?? I've only gotten a couple testicle shots. Definitely more satisfying in this game since you see the ... thing explode >_>

Its more of a personal thing.

Mine was getting a ricochet shot all the way through Hitlers left forearm, off one of the cars on a train, then through his nuts as the bullet started tumbling end over end from all the contact.

Shouldn't he only have one nut???

I haven't gotten any cool ricochet kills. I did get a lucky double kill after booby trapping a guy and then somehow escaping this death trap of forces on the Monastery level.

Eh 3 was OK but the levels are way more linear than in 4. And I don't think there's as much replay value, though they do encourage you to explore a little bit because certain enemies contain parts/upgrades.

Alright finally did it. The two keys to that dockyard are the opening and your route. My winning strategy was...

1 - Bumrushed the guy at the campfire (he's not paying attention, if you crouch and sprint and make a lazy semicircle you get the drop on him really easily).
2 - Switched to suppressed rifle rounds.
3 - Sprinted down the *left* path from where you start; this is the path that brings you to the end of the road with a few vehicles, two guards on the ground, a guard on the walkway above.
4 - Because you get there fast enough, you can snipe a truck delivering 3 guys before they can unload.
5 - Snipe the other guys with your suppressed rifle ammo.
6 - Booby trap that side entrance to the train station.
7 - Snipe the assholes in the middle of the map (the main entrance / road covered by the pillbox).

Whenever the trap went off at the side entrance I would make sure the hallways were clear then just set another one.

Anyway, then I wound up going through the train entrance going clockwise around the map and clearing everything. It was actually pretty easy up until the very end when a Jaeger squad almost fudged me over.

Oh, other things - once you've cleared away a good sniping spot, clear out the enemy snipers because they will screw you hard. They were definitely my longest shots, one was just under 300 meters.

And clear the map and spotlights first and grab a panzerfaust. Knock out the anti-air gun at the very far end of the map past all the warehouses (where the harbormaster is). I stuck to the rooftops, it was easy enough to pick people off and take out the tank from the rooftop (blind fired at it, the aiming line turns orange/red when you've got a solid hit lined up).

Then go back to the gun you destroyed and follow the water line to the other gun. I stopped at the railway tracks that the second train rides along to lay down a few mines, figured I could stop it and break its line of sight as I make my escape.

Looking back I would boobytrap the road to that last radio room since that's where the Jaegers spawn in.

The Monastery took me all. friggin'. day. On my successful attempt it took 2 hours 3 minutes. So lucky there's an exfiltration point on the *rear* side of the monastery because I anticipated having to fight through to that village with the tank.

last sniper elite game I played was v2 and I really enjoyed it. 3 looked kind of lame. Is 4 pretty decent?

3 and 4 put a bigger emphasis on stealth in my opinion. I never played the original, but the second game wasn't *so* bad because any time you were supposed to be sneaky, there were plenty of noise-making events to cover up your shots.

3 started expanding the maps and making it more like a playground, and 4 took that concept and expanded on it a lot I think. Plus they've added challenges to increase replayability, and it looks like some of the DLC levels have Hitman-style objectives (finishing off targets in certain ways).

Curious why you thought 3 looked lame though?

Ugh first real attempt at Megazzano Facility or whatever it's called, was doing pretty good for a while but got trapped. The AI's pretty damned smart about flanking, outsmarted my mines.

Bigger emphasis on stealth sounds hella fun. I only say that about the third mostly because I saw clips from friends who played it at the time and it seemed like nut shots were shoehorned in even when they werent aiming there and the cheesiness kind of put me off. If theyre straight improvements to 2 though Ill probably be checking out 4 soon, have been itching for a new game.

welp I am done trying that map for the night >_>. Was sniping from the giant ass cannon, cleared out a big swath of the first area, moved up the right side of the map where there's a windy road and a bunker with some electrical machinery to shoot. I was clearing. that. shit. out. And people kept coming but I had a ton of ammo. Finally made the mistake of going deeper into the bunker; when I came back there were three guys waiting for me. I nailed two no problem but when I went to corner the third guy he hit me in the face with a Panzerfaust. -_-

Yeah but the mask is so friggin' infrequent. I do like the giant ass naval cannon on the Magazzino Facility level, has a faster rate of fire and you can hit more from that area.

I don't remember anything feeling shoehorned in to the third game, it just felt a little incomplete at times (like the raid on the airfield, where enemies spawn, friendly jeeps spawn and start driving around and shooting the enemies, and the groups of enemies just kind of die out? It felt a little artificial.

The fourth game by and large feels more solid, though there are still points where I get waylaid by an enemy who should have tripped a mine. And the challenges encourage replays of maps with different playstyles - the Monastery map has "kill X enemies with a shotgun and complete the mission" and "only melee kills allowed". On the Dockyard one of them was "don't spend more than two minutes at a sitting heartrate" - don't even know how the hell that's supposed to be done.

And I've gotten at least 1k kills now and I think maybe 8 testicle shots? It's disgusting when you get one for sure, but not very common, though there is an achievement for incapacitating an enemy then finishing them off with a shot to the testicles >_>

The biggest differences I've seen are that you don't see any notifications about item pick-ups (so you just check your inventory >_>) and it *does* give you objective hints when you're close to an objective location - I didn't have those in regular authentic for some reason. Oh and no autosaving which is a pain in the ass.

If you're patient and suck at stealth then the old sit back and wait game is a pretty good way to get through Authentic mode, *but* it's pretty rough since the AI here is actually a bit better than in your standard third person shooter game.

I've been playing so long that even the screenshots have a jittery motion to them.

edit: Also can't take a picture of it alone but there are times where the ragdolls get REALLY funky from explosions, like watching tubes of jell-o flying through the air >_>

I can't even begin to understand how a person figures out all the timing for stuff like that. It reminds me of how you'd play through a classic Mario or Sonic level and know where all the jumps are and where the enemies spawn, except that's a two dimensional space with far fewer variables to memorize.

... Was doing the old "kill everyone" routine, thriving, got to that part where you have to blow up the arc generators, shot the main machine that explodes all of them at once, explosion killed me -_-

Hopefully you like it -_- It's a predominantly stealth game and I am totally not playing it the right way.

Finally beat Magazzeno Facility, took my time and got really lucky in the beginning with how the enemies spawned.

Almost died at the end though only 60 meters from the final objective... got spotted by a sniper, tried to shelter in place, someone else started shooting me and I just dashed for it... Holy eff.

Running around with a pistol on this Fiorini Mansion map, and between this and the speedrun videos I've come to realize that the AI's Achilles' heel is when it's on the move to your last known position. It seems like their vision cone narrows down a lot or they enter some uninterruptible trance or something, so if you're moving around a lot it makes it really easy to pick off enemies from the side without them noticing you, *PLUS* they won't even shoot until they enter some sort of cover or at least terminate their search routine.

This mission is easier in theory since there are a lot of chokepoints (the bridges) but I just effed myself over trying to rush to the end objective :(
