What's the consensus here? I'll get RE3make eventually, but I can get RE7Gold for $20 right now.

Heard nothing but good about RE7
Seems pretty fun. I'm a little worried since it looks kinda scary/horror in comparison to something like RE2make, but I could probably get on with it.

Currently playing RE2make and loving it.
How is the first one compared to the second TC?

Well, this might be a little off base since REmake was the first RE game I played, but imo REmake is a bit more complex in terms of progression/puzzle structure. The Mansion is a more complicated environment to navigate than the police station, and there are a lot of little things that help you keep track of things in RE2make like objectives and locked doors being marked with what unlocks them. In RE2 I almost always felt like I knew what I needed to do to progress, but in REmake I spent a lot more time wondering around and collecting seemingly random items that I would use in puzzles, until something clicked. There's nothing stupidly obtuse about it, but it's definitely more difficult to have a clear sense of what you need to do than it is in 2 imo. I did play my second run (with Chris) referencing key maps just to make my life easier.

As for the combat, I would say the vibe is pretty different. I was much more aggressive in RE2make, and there are three reasons for that: 1) REmake requires ink ribbons to save, so unlimited saves made me feel more comfortable taking risks in 2, 2) there are not hip pouch inventory expansions (but all items take up only one slot), so typically I only carried one weapon in REmake, and 3) the existence of crimson heads. In REmake there's a mechanic where most of the zombies will come back from the dead as super zombies after a certain period of time if you don't burn their bodies or blow off their heads. Therefore there is much more incentive to avoid killing zombies as much as possible, where in 2 you're mostly just concerned about ammo resources. I also think avoiding damage from zombies without shooting them was easier in REmake than RE2make, but I just started the B scenario so I can't say for certain yet.

In spirit, though, they are very similar. Go from environment to environment acquiring items and information to solve puzzles, going into optional areas/puzzles for better gear, deal with monsters, and conserve your resources as you can. RE2make is a more intuitive game, and the combat is certainly a lot more fun, but REmake has a lot of the same DNA if you can enjoy the fixed camera perspective and the tank controls. I would definitely say it's worth a shot, since I think REmake HD is a pretty cheap game these days.

i mean, re7 isn't anything like remake or re2make. it's a story driven first person game that has a fantastic first half and a blah second half. there are hardly any references to other re games, if you're looking for that. it was mostly made to cash in on the demand for something 'silent hills'-esque

i'd call it more similar to games like outlast

I only worry about getting too scared <_<

These two games are more "tense" than scary, know what I mean? Anyway, it's only $20 so I'll give it a shot, fuck it.

It has a couple of good jump scares but honestly most of it is more campy sort of horror. Very Texas Chainsaw inspired.

I played it in VR which was one hell of a ride.

Well, for reference REmake is the first survival horror game I've ever played, RE2make is the third (after RE0). So that is my entire basis for comparison lol.

I don't mind a couple jump scares. Some of the lickers in RE2make "jump scared" me lol.

It starts off pretty different but eventually it gets to familiar RE territory.

It's not about zombies though. It's probably best just going in not really knwoing what to expect. It does a few things that are different from the RE norm and can get pretty bonkers.

from what I've played, the main villains are more interesting than any others in the series, IMO, and getting more and more access to the mansion helps really set the atmosphere.

the fodder enemies are less interesting than the zombies, though, and the game loses steam later on, but tbf, I think that's the case with all of the games in the series when you gain access to the research facility stuff.

Sounds like I should have started with the first game. What you described means that it'll probably be very difficult going from the second game to the first.

The influence of newer horror games is abundant. Im more of a fan of the more action oriented stuff. It's definitely not bad though.

RE 7 is fucking amazing. Not perfect by any means, but I'd say it rivals REmake 2, partly because of it just being a new creative work instead of a remake. I'm not even sure which I like better.
