I look at it in the same vein as a Pyrrhic Victory. It was great at the time, but it led to a series of circumstances that culminated in the most embarassing loss in Board 8 history.

Losing to Sandbag would've still been embarrassing even if 2003 never happened. It just magnified it somewhat, but Magus was already an established fraud at that point.

I think the difference between Magus and Knuckles is that Magus has more of a choking perception a la Tidus/Shadow where as Knuckles kinda just jobs to whatever high seed he gets to fight round two.

I feel like Knuckles is probably a better answer overall but I dont think Yoshi is that far off from Bowser/Luigi yet doesnt have a good run like either of them do.

Oh, I don't think Knuckles has ever had an embarrassing loss like Magus has. He's just always the victim of middling seeding.

His losses are to Snake, Squall, Yoshi, Mega Man, Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Samus, and Zero, so that's pretty good company.

But he's still a pretty strong character who's never made it to round 3.

After thinking for a while, I thought Ganondorf because I felt like he always gets fed to Link...but I have no idea if that's actually accurate.

It's only happened twice! Ganondorf kinda has had bad luck, but part of it is because he has probably the second worst sprite out there, and he's not as strong as Snake to make up for it. Getting stuck against Vincent in round 1 in 2006 was very bad luck though.
