Do you think red states like Texas are more likely to be gullible and blindly follow Trump. Like downplaying the virus and calling it a hoax?

https://www.khou.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/coronavirus-texas-mayors-letter-to-texans/285-732817d2-91ef-488e-97a4-0179eb467c21
With COVID-19 cases rising in Texas, the mayors of nine cities penned a letter to Texans with an urgent request: dont let your guard down with the virus.

In a three-page letter released Thursday afternoon, the mayors asked everyone to say vigilant and do the simple things to combat the coronavirus: social distance, wash your hands and wear a face covering in public.

Its a message, they admit, that this long into the pandemic can easily get lost or be ignored. But it's one, they said, all Texans must continue to practice.

The virus is here. Infections are rising. Hospital capacity is filling up, the mayors wrote. This isnt meant to scare you, but it is meant to be very honest. The virus doesnt leave just because our collective urgency has gone away.

The letter was written by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Joe Zimmerman of Sugar Land, Pete Saenz of Laredo, Jeff Williams of Arlington, Steve Adler of Austin, Ron Jensen of Grand Prairie, Ron Nirenberg of San Antonio, Dee Margo of El Paso and Dan Pope of Lubbock.

In Texas, there are more than 1.5 million COVID-19 cases as of Thursday afternoon, including 2,100 deaths. There have been an estimated 63,000 recoveries.
In Houston alone, there are nearly 11,000 cases, including 175 deaths.

Six of those deaths came Thursday as the city has seen a spike in fatalities since Texas began reopening in May.

If we want the economy to open fully and stay open, if we want to send our kids back to school from pre-k to college, if we want to watch and play sports with people in the stands, if we want to attend cultural arts events like concerts and theatre, if we want banquets and parades in the fall, if we want our lives back as Texans, we need to take this seriously, they wrote.

Where are they getting 1.5 million COVID-19 cases in Texas from? The sites I've been looking at show just north of 100,000.

Texas students will be returning to public schools in person this fall, Gov. Greg Abbott told state lawmakers Thursday morning.

The state's top education officials confirmed the plans in a statement to The Texas Tribune.

"It will be safe for Texas public school students, teachers, and staff to return to school campuses for in-person instruction this fall. But there will also be flexibility for families with health concerns so that their children can be educated remotely, if the parent so chooses," said Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath.

When students return, school districts will not be required to mandate students wear masks or test them for COVID-19 symptoms, said Frank Ward, a spokesperson for the Texas Education Agency.

Abbott has pressed forward with reopening businesses and other public spaces for weeks, even as the number of new cases and people hospitalized with the virus has continued to rise. Democrats and officials in some of the state's biggest cities have raised alarm about the pace, saying it's putting people's health at risk.

"Abbotts failed leadership has cost lives and has led to Texas becoming one of the most dangerous states to live in during this pandemic," said Texas Democratic Party Communications Director Abhi Rahman in a statement Thursday.

But is the governor wrong when he's actually right about young people are more likely to spread the virus?

Look at California when almost half of all new cases are from those under 35. Despite the difference in policy, both places have young people testing positive at high rates.

I think a lot of it is people wanna get back to their normal lives, and Trump and Big Wheel being powerful political figureheads gives them that important voice of authority telling them that they can finally get back to normal. Nobody is gonna listen to the mayors because they're not as high on the political food chain.

But I have liberal friends that hate Trump that are itching to get out too, and some have. So I wouldn't blame it totally on Trump and Big Wheel.
