That's what I figured, but I didn't think there was any way an Assist Trophy would get upgraded to fighter. I've never heard anyone even clamoring for that one.

I wasn't sure, because when I typed in Akira Nintendo or Akira video game, it brought up a ton of stuff, including Persona characters, so I didn't know who it was even referring to.

There's little reason to avoid adding a character just because they are already an Assist Trophy in the game. There are workarounds like not letting that Assist Trophy spawn if the same character is in battle. But they could even do nothing like how they left Chrom in Robin's Final Smash.

It has more to do with the amount of work involved with adding an Assist Trophy in the first place. It's not exactly a simple addition to the game. It takes a ton of man hours. And then to end up just adding them as a fighter renders much of that work pointless to the average gamer, because the Trophy is no longer special.

Man Rex would be the worst possible xenoblade representative for smash.
I'd take goddamn tatsu over him. Give us Elma, so we can have some xenoblade x smash remixes please. (Also female PoC)

I agree that they shouldnt let an AT stop them from adding a character, but I think the fact that an AT exists indicates that they have no intention of adding the character.
If Sakurai had any desire/expectation for adding Akira or whoever as a playable character I dont think he would make them an AT in the first place.

Yeah, but originally Sakurai did not intend for a second fighters pass and I believe that changes things. Like, he could have intended for someone to only be an AT originally because he did not believe he'd be adding six more characters.

I think it's clear that a character is more likely to get in if an interesting moveset can be made for them. A lot of the Fighter's Pass characters so far have been a showcase of new ways for fighters to have abilites and unique moves.

The Driver/Blade combo that Rex brings opens a whole world of fun gameplay ideas that I'm sure Sakurai would like to try and bring to the table. I think that's why he (or at least some other Driver) has a very high chance of making it to the fighter's pass, over any other reason.

I was thinking this earlier. I'll be surprised if we actually get any more fighting game characters at this point. I dunno if this was something Sakurai said or not but each DLC fighter is meant to have something different from the starting roster and i think all the bases have been covered in regards to fighting games now. I mean what popular fighting game franchise is left that has a gimmick that could work in Smash?

You aren't exactly wrong. At the time the Assist Trophies were decided on, all of this trophy characters were likely already ruled out for both the base game and the first set of DLC. This probably extended to Spirits as well. The thing is that plans changed and they decided to do a second set of DLC. The choices for the second set of DLC may conflict with ATs or Spirits and they would need to make a decision if that matters or not and I think they would decide that it doesn't. I guess that's easy for me to say about Spirits when that rule is already dead but I don't think ATs will stop them either.

Also Sakurai can change his mind about the playability of a character. Little Mac was an AT in Brawl, and Isabelle was an AT in Smash 4, and both got upgraded to playable in the next game.

Pretty much every fan-imagined Smash 'rule' gets broken eventually. Remember when Fire Emblem was only supposed to have Marth plus a rotating cast member? It's very possible we get an AT character.

Which is almost a shame because Rex - despite providing more Xeno representation and a potentially unique movement - is inherently lame.

Yeah, but there's a definite difference in upgrading an AT to a new character in a whole new game, and adding a playable character with an AT that's already in that current game. Obviously it's not impossible, but it's sorta a completely different situation.

I do think there's atleast some desire to not re-use characters, because I can't really see them picking Min Min over Spring Man or Ribbon Girl otherwise. They've never showed any desire to focus on popularity over main characters previously.

Yeah, but we don't know the details of that conversation. They may have asked the director because they already ruled Spring Man out due to being an AT. And Spring Man was clearly the first choice for getting anything ARMs in to begin with since they rushed his AT in.
