Medabots had a pretty fun TCG. You placed the cards on a 3x3 grid and could move them around on your turn. Sort of like an SRPG. And your position determined what kind of attacks you could use.

.Hack had a fun one, too. But it was really convoluted and me and my brother were never sure if we were playing it right.

Konami tried a TMNT card game in the late 00s, but it was pretty lame.

one time I tried to play a card game based on Game of Thrones. this was years before the tv show and at the time I didn't even know what Game of Thrones was. I had no idea the game was based on anything.

anyway, someone tried to explain to me how to play and we might have messed around for a short time but then I think I stopped.

i played "MLB showdown" in the early 2000's, a baseball TCG from wizards of the coast. it was pretty friggin cool if you happened to be both a geek and a baseball fan, but i think that target market was pretty small

Nope, I've only played the big three (Pokemon, Yugioh, Magic) so far. I really want to try playing WIXOSS someday because the anime was amazing, but the real life TCG has no official English release and probably never will.

Lol. Didnt even know Wixoss was based on a real card game.

Speaking of weeb shit, I really liked WeissShwarz but finding playgroups was impossible. And the few that existed were super small and flakey.

Some of the less well known ccgs I've played include Netrunner, Legend of the Five Rings, and Jyhad (before it became Vampire: the Eternal Struggle). I also remember one based on either Star Wars or Star Trek but I only played that one once.

I absolutely love ccgs. I've played more than 50 of them, and still have sizable collections of several.

L5R is probably my favorite, though Netrunner and Magi-Nation are close.

that one was fun. if you're still interested, there's an unlicensed version out called Clutch Baseball that uses mostly the same ruleset.

I had a few cards, but wasn't super into it back then.
The only strange or obscure ones I've played are Kamihime, a deckbuilding one featuring fanservicey characters (not mine)
And Twilight's Secret Shipfic, a weird almost scrabble like brony card game about shipping. With plenty of in-jokes

Yeah, it was pretty well designed and quite a bit of fun, but it was best played with 4-5 people and a typical game would take hours. There was a year or so where I could regularly get a decent game at our local game shop, but after that it faded pretty fast.

Oh my gosh! I forgot all about Magi-Nation! I always wanted the GBC game when it came out, and was super jealous of my friend who had it. >_>

Huh. I'm almost curious how a romance card game would even work, lol. >_>

Does Culdcept count? It's a video game series, of course, but it's card-driven, and deck building is a vitally important part of it.
Basically imagine if Magic: The Gathering and Monopoly had a kid.

Oh! Can I ask what year you were playing in school?

In my area it felt like everyone was into YuGiOh. But it was also around the time the show was just starting, and the hype of the first few sets like Metal Raiders and Magic Ruler that had a bunch of iconic anime cards.

I played Force of Will for like... a summer. It was hot for a minute, but faded pretty quickly. I like its system; there's a dedicated draw pile for the game's mana/energy equivalent, so you can't get screwed over that way.

It is. Plus, best girl Piruluk's decks have a playstyle similar to the Yu-Gi-Oh archetypes that I used to play when I played that (standard Piruluk cards self-mill a lot like Lightsworns, and Allos Piruluk cards discard to activate effects like Dark Worlds). So between her playstyle, her design, and her being best girl in the anime, she's 100% the LRIG that I would build a deck around if I could ever play WIXOSS in real life.

Those are two more that I've had a mild interest in playing too. Not enough of an interest to actually spend money on it though...

I bought a box of V:TES cards at GenCon years ago looking to finish off a deck I was building based around Ignazio Giovanni. Long story short I didn't get any of the cards that I needed, so a guy a WhiteWolf who shall remain nameless for the time being said he'd send me the cards, and never did.

The most obscure card game I've played is the X-Files CCG and it also is probably the best CCG I ever played. The rules and cards just made so much fucking sense. I almost want to remake the game on my own (in an original setting).
