American racism mainly exists in the south and Midwest. For the most part the coasts are diverse. Yes there is systemic racism with the police but pertaining to daily life I don't think it's a huge deal on the coasts.

In pretty much every other country in the world racism is way worse, maybe with the exception of great Britain. Even Canada has bad racism and its almost more common. All these European countries are racist as fuck. Especially France and Italy, fuck them.

I agree that Canada has a big racism problem, especially against Native Canadians. I had to take a workshop on Indigenous learning during my teaching degree and the struggles that the prof talked about are so similar to those of black Americans.

The worst part is how jealous other Canadians are of the steps the government has taken to make amends. Yes, most Indigenous Canadians get cheap tuition. They also have to pay for elementary school and high school. And until recently (before the Jordan Principle), some Indigenous people that were caught between systems wouldnt get health care.

Anyway, yeah, hopefully America is just ground zero for a global movement.

Coming from the South(Atlanta) and now living in the North(New York). There's still racism but its expressed differently.

I do agree that America, for as racist as we are, is more tolerant than other a lot of countries but thats like saying we're the one of the skinniest fat kid at fat camp. We could all stand to lose some more pounds before we pat ourselves on the back.

LAPD and NYPD have been responding to this much worse than APD and HPD. Don't know why you are trying to elevate blue cities.

I do agree that many countries have it worse. The historical context has made racism much more taboo in the United States. You can be openly racist in many other countries, and it'd just be business as normal. In the US, you can get fired or shamed to death for a single comment.

Racism isnt just an American problem. As terrible as it is, I admire that Americans can speak up about things and fight for change. Canada has a big racism problem but were a passive people so no one really speaks up. In Europe, they have huge problems with fans abusing their black soccer players. Making monkey noises at them and throwing bananas. And nothing is done about it at all. If it happened in American football, it wouldnt be tolerated.

And yes, Italians, French and Spaniards are some of the most racist people I have ever met. Ive met several and they made their distaste of brown and black people very clear. One Italian guy I met in a club asked me my ethnicity and when I told him it was middle eastern, he acted super sad and said it was like a flower growing out of a pot of dirt.

So have I fam, people in South Korea(seoul) literally stopped in their tracks and started staring me down because of how dark I was.

I've been to a few other countries and while I didn't personally experience racism (Netherlands, Denmark, France, UK, Spain and Germany) I've been told that the French are pretty racist towards black folks and that most countries aren't accepting towards immigrants from the middle east.

Please let me know if I'm misinformed, I'd love to be wrong on this.

I want to agree but I don't want to be naive either, some were probably curious but some were probably scared too.

I was visiting a friend who taught little kids and she decided to bring me in since they'd never seen a black person in real life before. The teachers were a little apprehensive at first because they didn't know if it was right for them to expose the kids to me without their parents permission(Very upper class children). But the head teacher agreed that it would be a good experience so I went.

Needless to say they lost their shit lol some were crying some were fascinated, they were all lovely little derps by the end. They were really freaked out when I showed them my palms and they weren't the same color of my skin.

I dont think that means theres no problem in America or that it should be ignored. It just makes me roll my eyes when other countries are pointing at America and going omg look how messed up they are when they have similar issues and ignore them.

But I'm just saying people in other countries have no right to talk trash cuz it's worse there.

And I'm not talking about just racism against black people, I mean discrimination and bigotry against other ethnicities and religions as well. America is by far the best in that regard.

My grandmother was treated like garbage by some people when she arrived in Far North Queensland in the 1970s. From her skin tone (she was part Romany), they thought she was a half-caste Aboriginal woman and treated her accordingly.

My other grandmother, who actually *was* a half (or quarter, she was too ashamed to tell anyone anything other than that she had Aboriginal heritage) caste Aboriginal woman, was pathologically afraid of getting a skin tan, for fear that people would realise she was Aboriginal. She was also the most racist person I have ever met. She was a strange woman. Filled with a spite and desire to inflict emotional pain I have never seen in another human being.

I recall when my father and I visited for my grandfathers 70th birthday celebration when I was 10. My grandmother told me a joke.

How do you stop a **** from drowning? [You can guess what the word was. I refuse to repeat it. It is an epithet that makes more contextual sense given American biota].

Yeah. Not only is just a handful of areas not represent the situation in the country but there could be in part other reasons for behavior.

For example if they were(wittingly or otherwise rude or doing something unusual. Not that I am denying some of these posters experienced racism or ignorance but it's a bit foolish to compare racism in two countries(one that you live in and the other you stayed In for probably a week or so in an area plenty of people are probably irritated by tourists even without factoring in racism) based on a vacation.

My impression has been that people in cities and on the coasts often like to think of themselves as more enlightened, intelligent, and civilized than people in the south and midwest. So, it isn't exactly uncommon for them to look down their nose and shit on those dirty, ignorant,, unintelligent, sister-fucking rednecks in their backwoods, hick, fly-over boonies.

And, in a similar fashion, europeans often like to look down their nose at the colonies.
