Most space work games are piloting a ship to trade material (Elite/X/Transcendence) or at the opposite end a mining game that just coincidentally takes place in space.

Space Engineers. Space-based craft 'em up.

Or by "mining game" did you mean crafting game? In that case nvm.

Astroneer is a new game that seems interesting but I don't know much about it.

I kinda meant a combo of mining and crafting... like No Man's Sky or Starbound

Star citizen. All kinds of jobs in space. Now you can do other players jobs they need help with(escort, retrieval, bounty, etc) plus they have NPCs that give job chains as well now.

Yaknow how in star trek all the non-main characters seem to be doing things? like doing experiments or maintenance or scanning something?

That seems neat.

Pulsar: Lost Colony

It's a shitty indie game but it's like Star Trek where everyone has a job.

I watched "The Show" play it on youtube and that was like 10x the entertainment anyone would get from actually playing it.

Edit: It actually has a 9/10 rating on steam so maybe it's not as bad as it was when those guys played it.

Ya, when I checked it on steam I saw it was already on my ignore list and was like, wut? It might have been VR only at the time or something like that

...

As an aside: Ok, I don't drink, never have, but I totally have what I imagine a hangover feels like... what even.

That sucks. I hate when I feel physically weird and can't pinpoint why. Hopefully you don't have COVID.

Oxygen Not Included is another game with jobs. You assign your guys jobs (there are 12 of them) and can level them up to become proficient. It's a colony builder/sim game. You've probably heard of it.

It's super addictive but it has kind of a steep learning curve. I think that's the point though; you're supposed to fail over and over and try new things until you succeed. Kind of like in their previous game Don't Starve. Me? I just watched a quickstart guide on youtube.

your description is extremely vague... is what you're talking about like Privateer 1 and 2, where you fly around space doing various missions? (haven't actually played 2 but I want to)

so, not in space, but doing work on the surface of an alien planet? all I got is "jobs" that somehow translates into "mining and crafting"

Crashlands: survival/resource game on an alien planet (a bit simple; kind of like a mobile game, but still a good game)
Factorio: survival/resource game on an alien planet
Kerbal Space Program: explore an alien solar system using extremely realistic tech and physics
Space Colony: build a space colony, making sure the people working there don't go nuts from boredom

Some other games where you're technically "doing a job in space":
Descent
DOOM
Mass Effect games
MechWarrior games
Outcast

Space Station 13

You can be a janitor, a bartender, a cargo technician, a security officer, an engineer, and so on.
All on a space station and hoping you don't get blown up by people.

Well, it's hard for me to describe ('cuz I'm bad at languages)... but I have lots of space games where you pilot a ship and do things (typically trading and combat)

I want a space game that does the everything in-between. like, idk, Firefly

I don't think you could get more than KSP. it doesn't have trading or combat; you're running a space centre, and employing people (kerbals) in real space exploration jobs to do real space exploration things. your employees do things like pilot craft, remote control rovers, fix broken wheels, extend solar panels, run science experiments, etc.

(For some of the other games I listed, note that I listed them because you are technically there on a literal job.

Crashlands, you are delivering packages for a space delivery company, but crash on an alien planet and try your best to get your packages back so you can deliver them while exploring the planet and learning about the aliens that live there.

Descent, you are hired to destroy the reactor cores of X number of space mines. (Dealing with corporate scumbags is part of the theme of the game, sort of, even though it's 99% combat and 1% story.)

MechWarrior games, often you have to manage your Mercenary company, managing finances, repairs, hiring new pilots, moving to new star systems to find better contracts, upgrading parts of your dropship, buying and selling mechs, etc.
)

well, there's FTL where you build a crew to run a space ship, and primarily repair things as they take damage, run critical ship systems, deal with fires and boarders, etc.

and in Space Colony, it's largely focused on making sure your colonists spend their time and resources maintaining the colony and IIRC fulfulling the requests of the company that sent you there.

there's Rimworld too, that I forgot. similar to space colony, but independent survivors trying to build a colony out of scrap on a junk planet.

(it sounds like maybe you're looking for a 1st or 3rd person game where you play just a(n insignificant) crew member of a large ship, and have to do your mundane duties without actually being in control of the ship in anyway?)

I guess an issue with that is that the story would have to be linear or something. otherwise, where is the ship going/what is it doing if the player is not making any decisions about that.

it's not what you mean, but System Shock 2 is sort of like that. you're a "space marine" on a large ship, just that the ship has gone to hell and you're given missions from someone you don't know, and it's not really a "job".

there's Star Trek on the SNES but you are in control of the ship. you control each individual crew member on the surface of planets that you visit though, and have to use people of different skills to solve the problems you find.

there's Star Trek Online, but from the sound of it you start off as 1st Officer, and the intro makes you Captain.

Genesis Alpha One, kind of.
3030 Deathwar Redux, similar to Starbound but more RPG than Terraria/Minecraft clone.

The game you're looking for doesn't exist though. Star Citizen is a (shitty) attempt at getting close.
