All I can picture is a comedian like Bill Burr saying literally the exact same thing on stage and it killing, which is why I find the reactions either present in the image or when the image is posted to places like reddit a little off base.

but people online get too outraged to actually consider something like this. Bill Burr would have called him a shut in loser nerd as well, which is far worse than what this person said, and still, to a room of laughter.

People might call out Bill Burr for such a joke(but seeing his body of work that would be...not the right joke) but the fact he could say similar/the same thing to a room of laughter is my point. People post this image to reddit a lot and this girl gets shit on for her comment, but enough people out there don't give a fuck, don't mean anything personal to the wikipedia guy, and will laugh and find it funny.

Its almost like people going to see Bill Burr in person are there precisely for that sort of comedy versus a broad arena like Twitter. You also make the assumption that people wouldnt get upset at Bill Burr for the exact same reason, and youd be wrong.

Exactly. Burr is a touring standup comic that has spent years working on his timing and delivery. There's a huge difference between what guys like him and Stanhope are doing on stage for a paying crowd and what a random nitwit on Twitter is doing.

I wonder how this Twitter nobody would react to their own level of critique turned towards them and their need to criticize people for free as if they're providing a valuable service.

I get all that, I do. And while this is kinda counter to what you guys are saying I tend to look at a lot of things face value without tone or infliction sometimes, so I just see the text, and wonder what the big deal is, even though tone and infliction can and do alter peoples perceptions of things.

Ultimately I feel like outrage police(which of course does exist in Bill's world, even if I feel like a joke about Wiki-man wouldn't even be on the radar for them) take this post as an opportunity to shit on this person without even realizing its a basic level joke a LOT of people make all the time about various people. But its like the same people who post stuff to r/facepalm that obviously is satire or somebody being dumb on purpose, making it seem like the world is going to hell becuase people are stupid or something.

I get context, but sometimes I don't see why it matters.

I could sit here thinking to myself "ah yeah, of course a man who has over 1 million wikipedia edits is overweight" in a purely comedic context and I don't see that as any different than a comedian thinking of the same thing. Of course people go see Bill Burr to see his pushing the envelope type stuff, and I of course love the guy. So I get context in that way, but I don't browse twitter to see people be serious, or funny, or...whatever. On a place like twitter with thousands of different emotions coming through the pike I tend to take things as they come. A dime a dozen "crude" joke like the one in OP would hardly even register, let alone my first reaction wouldn't be to criticize/clap back at the person making it like they did something completely awful.

Not everything needs to be played from one side. Most of the time, when deciding something, it's needs to be looked at from every angle. I can't say all comedians get a pass, because they don't. But most seem to because it's their brand of comedy. And while most of twitter is shit, some stuff is fine...
