When I was a kid we always bought the Kraft Deluxe Mac & Cheese, the kind with cheese goo in a foil package. You just squeeze the goo over the noodles and stir. And that's what I thought macaroni & cheese was until I was a teenager.

When I finally saw the regular stuff with the powdered cheese, I was like, "What the hell is this crap?"

You have to heat the water to a full rolling boil first, then add the pasta, then cook it for the minimum time listed on the package (i.e., if it says 8-10 minutes, cook it for only 8), then immediately take it off the heat and drain it. Do not rinse.

We didnt rinse it either. Ive been cooking for a long time. Just for whatever reason we could not get that stuff to remain anything better than mush. Maybe it was a bad batch?


There is a smaller window for getting Kraft mac and cheese noodles al dente, but it's absolutely doable.
