The fact that you don't understand why it's considered a faux pas for anyone that's not black to be saying even the -a variation is pretty damn funny. You even just said "I'm not saying it, it'd be awkward".

I can imagine lots of reasons why its a faux pas. But the fact is, at many schools, and many neighborhoods, people of different races but from similar social and socioeconomic backgrounds are commingling; and it just isn't black people saying the word. And at least a good lot of them aren't batting an eye when their Mexican or Asian friends use the word. I've been to those schools.

It's not fair to villainize people for such a thing.
