What are the sides for?

Bored so curious what everybody thinks. The correct answer is that dirty dishes should be rinsed then put in the dishwasher but this is just about the correct use of the sink itself.

Obviously only food should go in the disposal side too.

Dirty dishes go in one side, which you then plug up and fill with soapy water. Then you clean the dishes and put them in the other side, and when it fills up you rinse them and put them in the drainer.

That's just asking for vermin to try to get into the trash cans.

my mother in law has a single basin sink, and it's a pain in the ass to do dishes.

you gotta put the dishes in this rack thing next to the sink, and when put that away when everythings dry. and if there's dishes in the sink, you can't just move the faucet to the other basin for anything, because there isn't one.

dual basin sink is the best sink.

and don't even get me started on those sinks with one big basin and then one tiny itty bitty basin on the side. what even are the fuckin' point of those? the silverware? ugh.

IDK if this is common, but what do you do when the side that is plug-able isnt the side that has the food disposal unit?

Only food should go in that side. Definitely should never have dishes and silverware just put in that side.

Old sewer systems probably. Also in the states, if you have a septic system, you can't have one.

I will say seeing people put whole food stuff in a garbage disposal instead of the trash, and not because of critter related fears by the way but directly said 'that's what it's for' was really gross.

I thought it was for the little bits normal/average scraping didn't get, not basically leftovers....

Only things not supposed to go in it that's food related are things that could damage it like coffee grounds, eggshells, and cherry pits.

That's fair.

It was just really gross and weird to me. Especially since they seemed to be too lazy to actually run the thing, and then got upset at the one doing the dishes (me) for it being too full and how that was apparently going to break it.

You... You did that guys....

I guess all the 'if there's too much food in it at once it's going to break' thing over and over left me with the impression the things aren't meant for more than mild clean up.

Also fun when some dumb jerk puts a chicken bone in there and starts blaming literally everyone else when he's the only one who recently ate chicken.

Fun times.

Yeah it should be run a few times instead of filling it up completely.

How much excess food are we talking about here going into the disposal? I eat everything off my plate/bowl and anything that cannot be eaten goes to a separate container to be buried in the yard.

That said, I put the dirty dishes in the left/non-disposal side when washing. It just feels more natural for me to move stuff to the right as I am washing.
