Yes, I would most certainly like to see a second series contest next year. This contest has been fun, but it's also filled with happy-to-be-here fodder and blowouts, and has an incredibly obvious winner. A 64-entrant series contest would be the exact opposite of that - absolutely crammed with contentious matches and general strength, and as long as you retire Zelda, there's four series with near-equal probabilities of pulling off a win.

Oh, Id maybe give a Mario v. Smash match a little hesitation, but I dont see Pokemon taking on Mario here.

Yeah, I don't know if I would have faith in Pokemon being in the upper echelon of a modern series contest, when that series is Gen 1 > Gen 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> everything else. Like Brawl is probably weak as hell after being replaced twice over, but I'd still have it over any Pokemon generation save the first two.

The only interesting thing about a series contest would be Smash vs. Pokemon, imho. We saw last time that Final Fantasy boils down to 'FFVII', and that probably hasn't changed.

Final Fantasy has only gotten weaker and weaker since then, while Pokemon has improved to the point where Pikachu beats every FF character not in Smash Bros.

The last series contest wasnt that predictable. There were only four perfect brackets, numerous upsets, and looking at the gurus only a small minority got the overall winner right. If it had been 64 entrants nobody would have been perfect. And thats my point - it would be much less predictable this time because there are so many more viable series and the hierarchy has changed a lot.

I also definitely dont think it sucked! It wasnt an all timer, but its the best of the side contests, which play an important role.

No, wait, three. Castlevania > Halo was an upset for some reason. But still, none of those results were surprises. And adding in a bunch of fodderific series for a new contest might make it a little more unpredictable but I don't think it makes it all that more fun. I didn't really enjoy the Series Contest the first time and I'm not really eager to see it again. Just keep trying new ideas, even if they flop, rather than reuse a mediocre one.

In the topic of Zelda vs. FF, back then it was a lot more notable. That match was the tipping point in Zelda vs. FF on this site. After that it was all over. It also gave us one of the best topics in Board 8 history:

I appreciate you trying to make it sound more exciting than it actually was by saying it was 10% of the entire contest, which is probably still very low compared to most contests. We've had more exciting matches in the last 5 days or so than the entire Series Contest.

this will create the highest number of competitive matches between strong series.

i'm too lazy to make a list but i'd wager once you go past 32 it'd already be going into fodder territory anyways.

Batman: Arkham, Chrono Trigger, Dark Souls, Fallout, Paper Mario, Persona, Red Dead, The Witcher, and Xenoblade beg to differ, just to name series which are pretty unambiguously not fodder. There's also all the fluctuations we've seen among existing series in the past 14 years, as Lightning Strikes pointed out.

The thing is that the idea of a series contest wasn't mediocre at all - if anything, it was the natural next evolution of a games contest. It's still the contest with the most votes per match relative to front-page traffic, and until this GotD, also had the most brackets entered relative to front-page traffic. The main problems with the contest we received were CJayC's questionable bracketmaking and it being a few years too early to have 32 series worth seeing, both of which are easily solvable 14+ years later.

See the list I cited above, and also 2018 has already shown us that any format other than single-elimination isn't worth having due to the redundancies and general predictability that multi-elimination formats produce.

You've listed a bunch of series that have exactly one popular game and probably wouldn't actually be that strong.

I don't feel like it would be as exciting as you make it sound with all those series.

Batman: Arkham, Paper Mario, and Red Dead don't even have one game that's distinctly more popular than the rest, let alone exactly one popular game in general. In fact, The Witcher is the only series I mentioned with exactly one popular game.

There's also a bunch more wildcards that may or may not be fodder and with major potential for interesting matches/set-ups regardless - think Ace Attorney, Animal Crossing, BioShock, Doom, God of War, Half-Life, Mass Effect, Mortal Kombat, Portal, Star Fox, and Tetris, among others.

Witcher as a series entry has to be up there in terms of series being carried by literally one game. Reminds me of how 'Smash' in 2006 was pretty much just Melee.

I'm sure some people here would know the answer without looking it up, but how many entrants in total across all contests are we up to now?

I figure we must be getting close to 1024 (if you count those in vote-ins), just have one massive contest which includes all previous entrants in one bracket. You would end up getting a mix of matches and have to decide which is stronger in any match - the character, game, series or even year (I would split up the rivalries as individual characters personally).

Sure it'd be a nightmare to predict (you would need to set aside 2-3 hours just to enter your bracket with over 1000 matches) and it'd run for ages, but why not. I'd like anything to fill in the gap, as I expect it will be 5 years until our next contest based on recent years. Maybe have this one as a 20 year celebration of the first contest in a few years time (by bringing back all the old entrants)?

...Seriously, series is also a fine choice for the next contest. As is a non-restricted character or games contest. To be honest ANY contest is fine, but I'm not expecting it to happen any time soon.

I think it would do better than all of r1 and some of r2. Also Metal Gear Revengeance, Dark Souls 2, 3D maker would beat all of the fodder games.
