For pullups the trick is you can't fall down or you'll lose, so don't even worry about going fast, just worry about not messing up your buttons. After ten or so in a row you can pick up your pace.

I'm in the hell yeah camp personally. Love the combat, love the characters, love the newness in the story, bring it on

Played chapter 1 of hard mode. Was a cakewalk as I expected. Triple slash just wins fights

Knowing everything I know now, I'm actually looking forward to a second telling of the story. I'm just hopping right back onto it and not skipping anything or changing up the order for now

finished Chapter 17 on Hard, had 2MP and 3MP on Aeris and Barret as I killed Arsenal.

Man 4 boss fights in one chapter is rough.

Was there any hidden point system in the game like the OG had with Golden Saucer?

It felt like there were a couple of opportunities to choose Tifa/Aerith/Jessie. One that comes to mind is when you fall down into the sewer and while it's not an obvious choice, you do choose who you help up and the other gets up on her own.

Chapter 14 has different resolutions at the beginning depending on who you had more "affection" with. If you did more Tifa stuff and choosing options like letting her make you a drink and stuff she will be waiting for you outside. If you did more with Aerith / pro Aerith stuff then you get a scene with her. If you don't do much for either you get a bro moment with Barret

So in the final boss Aerith came to help me first, but apparently it can be Tifa? What controls that? I'm surprised because I got Tifa's scene at Aerith's house.

Also goddamn the JENOVA theme kicking in when it did was so fucking perfect I love it

There's a lot of things in the game with her that heavily imply she knows the original timeline much like Sephiroth does.

Like when you first fall into the church and she mentions Cloud being a merc before he says anything about that, he makes a confused face, and she verbally backspaces and makes a very unconvincing excuse that she guessed because of how he was dressed.

I am so annoyingly close to beating the final Chadley gauntlet, but never quite make it there. Tried going in with Cloud/Tifa/Barret, Ice Elemental armor on Cloud, Fire on Barret. That gets me past Shiva, Fat Chocobo and Leviathan without much worry. Bahamut, I'm fine up until he summons Ifrit. Then I have two options, focus on Ifrit and Bahamut beats everyone to death and/or gets to his Megaflare win button, or I try to ignore Ifrit and he walks around punching everyone to death

Is Shiva really difficult enough that you need Ice Elemental armor on Cloud? If you had double fire then Ifrit would actually be healing 2/3 of your team and you could probably ignore him easier.

I find her incredibly annoying without it. After she gets off Diamond Dust, she seems to go into a rage mode spamming so many bullshit sleep spells that people start dying and I'm trapped in a Raise cycle wasting my MP.

Go all in on Bahamut for sure. The sooner he is dead the better. Manawall(Barrier)+Magnify was my savior for Megaflare

Just beat the game and I have some thoughts.

I predicted what the ghosts were very early on and I'm very happy with the route they took with it. I was worried that it was Cloud going back in time to save Aerith. Thankfully I was wrong and am really excited to see where this goes next.

That said the game itself is probably like an 8/10. The combat was great, I loved the story and seeing the game in modern graphics was great, but the padding was just too much at times. Also not a big fan of Sephiroth's usage in the late game, it felt like Square put him in just to appease the fans. I much preferred the slow build in the original and not even getting to see him until much later.

Still a really fun game though and I'm eagerly looking forward to Part 2

Unless you want to grind to 50 or grind materia then no not really.

Gotcha, and do I just start from the beginning? All the messages about the chapter select were a little confusing at the time.

Yeah you can start back with Chapter 1 on Hard. The chapter select menu will tell you how many manuscripts (for additional SP to upgrade weapons) and music discs you're missing in the chapter. Some of the manuscripts are missable if you're trying to rush through the game so I'd recommend looking those up if you don't want to replay the chapters in Hard mode a 3rd time.

I was skipping quests in Chapter 3 and missed a manuscript so I was upset because I didn't know they were missable.

Once you beat the game it unlocks a new Shinra Simulator at the start of Chapter 17. Pretty sure it has all of the missions from Chapter 16 and bonus ones

if you're not going down the route of having fire+elemental on two party members' armor to make ifrit a non-factor, just bank your limit breaks for when he shows up. two of them back-to-back should delete him quickly. with how much damage bahamut outputs, it shouldn't be hard to charge up your limit meters before ifrit gets summoned.

Yes this is where I wanna be. Awesome. Time to learn how the fuck to use Aerith.

Beat the first six chapters on Hard. Very easy to get through so far. The side quests in Chapter 8 might be the first real tests. Weapons I've been using: Cloud with Hardedge, Tifa with Metal Knuckles, Barret with EKG Cannon. Haven't set up Aerith yet. Triple Slash is so so good for early game at least.

So am I blazing through this game? Cause I'm about to finish chapter 7 and I'm about 8 hours in. Didn't they say this game is like 30-40 hours? It's only 18 chapters, are there some longer chapters coming up?

Some of the chapters are notably longer than others.

I'm mid chapter 14 at 35 hours or so and probably had about the same time you do when I was in Chapter 7.

Goddamn beat Chadley's nonsense, finally. The trick was going in with Revive Earrings and not dying all the way up to Bahamut. That way I could kill Ifrit, block Megaflare with my face, die and then finish him off.

I just save him until I was done preparing for hard mode so I was already level 50 and had all my materia maxed out that I wanted to use

Megaflare would still wipe out the entire party unless I used manawall then it was enough to survive and we were strong enough that we could out muscle him before the 2nd one hit

Someone on the ff7r board posted this video where they go in depth about all of the hints and stuff they leave for the future direction of the plot. It's 2.5 hours so warning on that front, have something else to do while this is playing but I will say as someone who was very disappointed with my experience with the ending it made me feel a lot more hopeful about the directions they could go so I'd recommend watching it if you feel like you could be in that group

Random end story question but is Sephiroth left handed or right handed? Watching through the last scene again really gives off just how much he is completely styling on Cloud. Beats him one handed and possibly with his non dominant hand.

Yeah Seph was fun but not a challenge. Only problem is that I have a really bad habit of not defending against magic and trying to dodge.

I would kill to be able to fight Rufus at will. So fun.

Man everyone is talking about how Sephiroth was a cool fight and easy but he almost ended me. I didn't have cure all equipped and was relying on Pray for AOE heals which is a struggle because he is too fast for that. I only won because he builds Limit stupid fast and I got like 3 off on him, plus Aerith's for more healing.

I put Pray on Barret which works miracles with his survivability+fast ATB build. Tifa's is faster, but she dies too easy.

Yeah I put it on Aerith for the boosted magic strength but she's a struggle to build ATB on. Especially on that fight. It was like end of disk 1 except it keeps happening.

Throwing Regen on people helps a lot too I found. Game became a lot easier once I started throwing regen on the character I was controlling

I mean why wouldn't he though? It's Midgar Cloud vs endgame Sephiroth. Cloud should be getting trounced unless he doesn't get stronger at all as the game progresses.

Barrier on Magnify is a game changer for certain fights.

Cure with Magnify on Aeris is also so damn good. Her Cura with her Magic stat and her final weapons skill tree is easy HP

I did this, but completely by accident. Didn't know that was the effect of magnify when I used it.

I just don't like using Aeirth in my party with how the game's mechanics work. Making Cloud a Spellblade with his second to last weapon and Barret as the Healer and Tifa as the Item Master user worked out a lot better for me.

In Hard Mode you can't use items and you only get MP back when a new chapter starts so MP management is like half the game. Being able to cast a cheap heal, or a free heal with Pray, is very nice.

I just beat Hell House on Hard and it wasn't really as bad as the normal playthrough. Maybe it was easier because I knew what was coming and I could prepare.

Though realistically I think I may end up finally playing FFVII itself for real before hitting hardmode.

Yeah, they really should have made an AI change for Aerith. It's obvious that the AI aggressively targets the player controlled character which puts you at a massive disadvantage if you try control Aerith for any length of time. The Provoke materia works to an extent but the fact that you have to utilize that is a negative.

You probably still want to use Tifa in hard mode because she has the fastest ATB generation for Chakra and Pray spam which is going to be more critical when MP is at a premium. Also it's kind of a moot point anyway. At no point does the game actually let you select your party from what I could see. Outside optional fights, it's a forced party set-up for the entire game

True, never really used Chakra at all.

I was so reliant on items and ethers...gonna be rough.

I tried using Chakra and Pray and didn't like either.

Pray is way too much ATB

For most of the game I've had every party member pretty much permanently equipped with healing materia. Regen is probably my #1 most cast spell

so one thing i didnt really understand

how did anything we did have an effect on zack living

or is it just supposed to be a potential alternate timeline and that's it
