It's difficult to define since it has no actual definition that's considered 100% accurate unlike most words.

But generally it comes form the idea of an alternative right in terms of left/right of American politics - it's further to the right and mixes in extreme beliefs like racism, sexism, etc.

I suppose the easiest definition I'd say is: it's an extreme conservative view in America that the average conservative wouldn't agree with.

To some extent the differences between the alt-right and conservatism are superficial; they share many goals, but take different rhetorical approaches towards getting there. But there are things that distinguish them from the strains of conservatism that have typically defined right-wing politicians in the US and UK

In comparison to a generic Republican, the alt-right is:
- more explicit about their racist and ethnonationalist beliefs, though sometimes layering this under irony rather than the usual dogwhistles
- younger, more online, and more conversant in memes
- less committed to the idea of free markets and capitalism, and willing to criticize the ways in which unchecked capitalism undermines the nation or traditional societal structures
- less motivated by religion, though rarely are they any less Islamophobic or homophobic
- more anti-Semitic
- no particular interest in "small government"

I always understood alt-right to be sort of an identitarian hyper-capitalist young republican thing. Like theyre fascists but they prefer bureaucracy to direct action

Neo-Nazis. That's pretty much it. It was a term invented for neo-Nazis to hide behind so they wouldn't be mistaken for neo-Nazis.

I'm fine with considering people who defend them, or give them the benefit of the doubt, in the same category. There is no shortage of ways to deal with them, so we don't have to be too frugal about their definition.

The greatest differences they have from the far left is their violent hatred of degeneracy, their embrace of hard nationalism rather than John Lennon's Imagine-style internationalism, and they replace the leftist hatred of "whiteness" with a hatred of "Jewry". Pre-2016:
Descendants of ideologies purged from conservative discourse by William F. Buckley. Basically, anyone that wasn't a Neocon or establishment Republican. Synonymous with dissident right.

Post-2016:
Neo-Nazis and White Nationalists, after every other dissident "rightist" ideology quickly ditched the label to avoid the association.
