If iPhones just does the following:
*Allows alternative launchers,
*Selection of "default" apps,
*Standardized USB Type C,
*Add an option for a univeral "back" button vs swiping, app-specific back buttons, etc.,

There would be absolutely no reason to buy an Android phone, except for budget users.

Apple needs better file system support. Trying to backup photos, videos, and documents off the phone, as well as transferring them on to the phone is a nightmare. when compared to Android.

Agreed, but I didn't list it because iOS backs everything up to iCloud.

Not really. Android is used by lots of manufactures and companies. Androids can be cheaply made, or top tier. Lots of options in terms of what you can get.

But with iphone, if you want certain features, too bad. If you want a cheaper phone, buy it used cuz too bad. They all look the same.

It's more than just the os

I've put myself in the Google ecosystem and like Apple, I think Google does have hooks in users that probably shouldn't be overlooked just yet. When I used to use Apple I was convinced most people used Android for customization and I think at some point in the past before companies really pushed the ecosystem it was pretty accurate.

Leaving Apples ecosystem was extremely painful. Imagine having over 300 passwords saved and locked into Apple's iCloud Keychain and not being able to easily export any of them from any of their platforms, including macOS. I had to individually log into every website to even make anything usable on Chrome and Android for me because all of my passwords are unique.

Why? iPhones have significantly better software updates than almost every single Android manufacturers (literally only the Pixel gets fast, regular updates), significantly better messaging via iMessages (it'll be interesting to see how the RMS will evolve the default Google Messages; but it may be too little, too late), and much more consistent cameras.

Oh, and in the app department, iPhones have much better apps than Android; even the same app for iPhone is completely different than Android... Apps also generally come first for iPhone, than later is ported over to Android. This is all because of fragmentation of Android and how many different devices there are.

I haven't really missed any apps on Apple's ecosystem. There was one app I replaced for reddit called Apollo but Sync Pro was as good if not better. I guess if you're a digital artist and using something like an iPad Pro to run adobe software you might be missing out but for the average user? I don't really think app support is lacking anymore on Android. But yeah, opinion follows use cases.

The only thing Im going to miss when I switch back to android is Apple Music. And even then, I wont miss dealing with the huge pain in the ass that is trying to get my personally downloaded songs from my computer, into iTunes, and then to sync with my phone that has Apple Music enabled. >_>

also they started cracking down on people using ten-year-old student emails for the student discount, so fuck em. Might as well move to Spotify.

Both OSes have their pros and cons.
Apple is generally better because their stuff just works. On android ive had an issue follow me through 4 phones and that is the issue where the play store breaks and you have to close it, clear the cache and data, sign out, restart phone, and maybe do that process 2 additional times before the store works again. Never had that on an iphone. Happens multiple times a month on all my androids
Although on iphone they dont have tachiyomi or clover

I honestly can't think of anything that isn't backed up on Android that is backed up on iOS. Android has had Google Drive backups in the cloud for a while now for the apps and some developers back up preferences. It also backs up settings, contacts and preferences across the system but I think some settings might not transfer well across manufacturers. You have passwords which can be encrypted with your own passphrase so Google can't access them (as far as we know), Google Photos which is unlimited. I might be leaving something out here..

Oh I use Google Voice as my main number so everything is backed up there no matter what phone I use. I couldn't tell you what the situation is with text messages on android and backing those up. My phone service is Google Fi.

Apple Music's recommendations are spot on, also I'm guessing you're aware they have an app for it on Android now right? I use it daily.

Also I hope they don't cut my student rate lol, 10 year old student email ftw.

Apple is great. Had Android for several years and had nothing but complaints while doing so. People want to write them off over a $1000 stand that they would never have to buy but that Galaxy S20 that costs more than a maxed out iPhone 11 Pro Max? It'll be lucky to have support in 3 years.

Meanwhile I just took a picture on my iPhone and my 8-year old iPad 4 received it though iCloud no problem. I can copy a link in Safari on Mac and paste it on Safari in iOS. Apple Music integrates with all my purchased music seamlessly. I just unlocked my MacBook simply by wearing my Apple Watch. Android devs are out here trying to make $1500-$2000 experiments in foldable phones to kill off tablets, but you can get the latest iPad for $250 new.

Interesting to note here though that:

  • At least in the use case you describe, you are able to send tabs (links) between Android and ChromeOS, or any device with Chrome.
https://i.imgur.com/EVU5P62.png

  • Both Android Wear and Android are able to unlock ChromeOS.
https://i.imgur.com/jUPnSD8.png

  • Photos taken on an android phone easily appear directly on any platform with Google Photos assuming you've set up the device to back them up automatically. It also does this for free at nominally reduced quality if you so desire.
The only thing that seems to be missing is simply copy and pasting ANY text and having it appear across devices.

iPhones suck.

They are overpriced.
No headphone jack, SD card slot or removable battery.
Android's integration with other Google products shits all over Apple.
Google Assistant is better than Siri.
Google gives you free Play Store credit for surveys.
Google Photos gives you unlimited backups for free.
Transferring files to Android is much easier.
Android has custom ROMs.

Most of that is on iPhone tbh and some better. Especially some of Google's own apps. You're definitely right that Google Assistant is better. Siri sucks.

But ROMs are kind of pointless nowadays since it's all locked. And they have started removing headphone jacks on everything.

Also Google Rewards gives you actual PayPal cash on iPhones, while it gives you shitty Google Play credit on Android.

Not to mention that Android phones don't hold their value nearly as well as the Apple ones do. That Galaxy S20 that costs more than an 11 MAX is cool and all (and better than said iPhone) but it will be worth less within like a month. Trying to re-sell that S20 a year old will likely get you less money than that dude trying to sell his 3 year old base iPhone 8 because Apple has some weird voodoo going on.

But I'm not going back to Apple anytime soon. The headphone jack is make-or-break for me.
