I went out to get toilet paper yesterday because I got spooked by tales of stores being sold out of it.

Luckily the Home Depot near my apartment was still holding.

You see, this is completely logical. The panic-hoarders may be overdoing it, but at the end of the day, we live on the same planet as them. Their actions have a ripple effect and so we have to act accordingly.

I've heard Home Depot is one of the safest bets right now, along with Family Dollar and Big Lots.

What a difference a mile makes. This is the frozen food section of the Whole Foods in Manhattan last night, near where I work:

and the packaged meat section:

And then I go to the supermarket by my apartment in Union City, NJ today and while there are some "holes", everything except for toilet paper and some cleaners was in stock.

In other words, "Yuppies be crazy"

Manhattan has a LOT of places that are just raided completely.
Queens meanwhile, i've been to a few parts over the past week and have found everything.

even hand sanitizer at one deli.

It is the toilet paper nutcases. Honestly people are overreacting to this whole thing. You arent gonna magically die of starvation, thirst and shit yourself to death if you somehow do happen to get Corona and get quarantined, but people are acting like they will. My local Walmart was pretty much obliterated as far as food goes and theres no toilet paper, hand sanitizer or wipes left either. There hasnt been any toilet paper for 2 or 3 days now I think

the only way to beat the crazy is to get your shit before they realize what's going on. check shops, check shops that are a bit out of the way.

once there, stock up. anywhere from 2 weeks to a month should be fine. personally, i'd go with a month of food and necessities, 6m of potentially useful medicine. though in some cases you already know that 6 months is gonna turn to 2 years; i ain't using 500 pills of ibuprofen that fast, 200mg or not.

It's not really practical at this point given its range. While I don't agree with the reactions of some, for instance the obvious ones like toilet paper goblins or doomsayers, I do think action should be taken to contain the disease. The biggest issue is that as a country, we are not really capable of containment and the strategies we are utilizing annoy me. They close all the schools but then moms just bring their kids and pack in tight in the supermarkets to buy up enough food and supplies for 3 months; what's the point of closing areas where large gatherings take place if those just cause even larger gatherings, and at important points of interest at that? Until recently absolutely no limits were being placed on the purchases of important goods, allowing some to hoard as much as they could fathom, which I blame squarely on the sensationalism surrounding this situation. The thing is, this is a country that elected a blithering buffoon as president. If you tell that sound populous things like "millions could die", they panic. The thing is that yes, if left unchecked millions might die. But those estimates were made against the country doing nothing to combat the virus and continuing living life as they were before, yet clearly measures have been taken to prevent that number from soaring to such heights.

I don't think saying the coronavirus is "nothing to worry about" is a good idea, not at all. But the opposite end of the spectrum is no better because it scares the general population into being idiots. It's important to get out the message about this in the right way so people can approach the situation with a calm, measured response that lies somewhere in the middle of what were are currently seeing I think. Unfortunately, given our culture resides squarely in the extreme realms of sensationalism it makes it fairly difficult yet I feel we are doing well with containment thus far, compared to other countries with outbreaks in the same time period. As much as I don't like it, the best thing moving forward is to just "get over" these idiot hoarders being idiots because Trump's initial response of "meh, no biggie" is a lot worse than crazy people beating each other with wine bottles outside Sam's Club.

Without mitigation each person infects somewhere between two and three people on average (though this will vary from community to community based on density, behavior, etc). To avoid a substantial fraction of the population getting it we need to bring that number below 1. Getting part of the way there slows the spread of the virus and reduces the chances of hospitals being closed down. We cant afford not to cancel /shut down nonessential things.

What is so bad about contracting the virus? You endure pain for about a week and thats it. Sucks, but you can do it. As for the very small amount of people dying from it, that sucks even more. But were talking about a tiny portion of mankind, none of which the users here fall into. I dont understand why everyone here doesnt seem to get this. Mitigation is necessary yes, I just wonder how much good certain forms of it are really going to do. If I had a child, I would rather them be in school than be inside a crowded supermarket if those are my only two choices. Obviously the best choice would be just staying at home until this dies down, but how many people are doing that and how many people even are going to have that option?

It certainly does present real challenges for some people (and grade school cancellations probably deserve more scrutiny than most others). Itll be even harder if dumbasses who totally can comply but dont want to be inconvenienced refuse to modify their behavior, though.

I ask because I got sick in January. First off, I seldom get sick. And Ive never gotten sick like this before. I missed almost two weeks of work, had 104.1 fever, total body chills, would wake up in pools of sweat, super sore throat, and it all started with a nasty cough in the span on two hours. I had mega shortness of breath to the point I would have to stop mid-sentence to catch my breath.

Being the way I am, I didnt see a doctor until about a week in. I was relying on tea, Nyquil PM, and soup. I was still very sick at this point but couldnt take it anymore. The doctor told me I had the flu (no tests, of course).

Now Im not saying I definitely had corona but its possible. Ive never been so sick in my life. But if THAT is what everyone is so afraid of catching, I say shame on you. Dont close down society because of it. That is why Im acting with such a boorish demeanor.

I, too, never ever get the flu. Havent gotten it in over a decade.

Just 3 weeks ago, I got the flu. Pretty much same symptoms as yours Moonroof except I didn't have that high of fever.

It was probably just the flu, for both of us.

I don't buy into the intentional bioweapon crap (if that were the case, China would have released it in Hong Kong or Taiwan),

There's theories going around a Hong Kong forum that this is a huge play from China, that the CCP released the virus in one of their own cities because they don't mind if millions of Chinese die from it given how much people China has. Once this spread to other countries they can make up stats to look like they successfully controlled it, that their totalitarian government structure is superior, that they are the saviors of the world by containing it for a month, and they are going to donate supplies to these poor incompetent Westerners.

That forum is ridiculously anti-China though, I don't believe most of it, but it's pretty evident China is trying very hard to spin this in their favor (just look at reddit/twitter and see how many new accounts are singing praises). Doesn't help that the US is not responding well at all.

Actually, unlike the flu, the young have been show to be rather unaffected by coronavirus. While kids can still get coronavirus, they don't get as sick from it and often develop little to no symptoms. Worldwide, there has not been a person under the age of 10 that has died from coronavirus. Kids are oddly faring better than healthy adults.
